6-1 Short Answer: Human Culture HUM-100 Perspective in Humanities Madison Jones Identify a creator from the twentieth or twenty-first century who you think made an important contribution to art and culture in the form of cultural works that impacted society. Billie Eilish is the creator I believe has made important contributions through cultural works during the twenty-first century. As a singer/songwriter, Eilish has released a number of songs that represent different aspects of the era. Billie Eilish began her career as a musician at the age of twelve. Since then, she has gained a significant following and won multiple prestigious awards for her music. With the popularity she has gained over the last five years, Eilish has increasingly used her music as a way to convey a message or personal opinion about culture/society. Quickly, her music has gone from the traditional upbeat hip-hop to music a bit darker with an edge conveying a mature message for an artist her age. Describe one of the cultural works they created and the medium. Most of Billie Eilish’s music is very juvenile, which is to be expected as the artist is only a teenager. However, as she has grown as a musician, the songs Eilish has released in recent years have become a darker, more mature version of typical pop music. One song in particular, “Bad Guy,” was released in 2019 as part of the When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Album has gained extreme popularity. Unlike most of Eilish’s music, “Bad Guy” is a dark and mystical tune almost reminiscent of Halloween music. In the song’s chorus, Eilish talks about a fictional male character and the typical attributes men attempt to portray. The deeper meaning
behind the lyrics can be interpreted as the artist questioning how individuals portray themselves versus who they truly are. In the era of social media prevalence, this theme is particularly true in today’s society, as individual media portrayal often significantly differs from reality. “Bad Guy” gained Eilish significant attention for its provocative lyrics and has earned her multiple awards, including a Grammy for Song of the Year in 2020. What questions about human culture does this work prompt? Some questions this cultural work prompts include: Does pop music have any significant influence on twenty-first-century cultural values and beliefs? What culture/subculture is Billie Eilish’s song “Bad Guy” most relevant to? How has social media changed human culture, specifically how humans express themselves and view others? What big questions do you think influenced the cultural work you selected? Consider addressing how this connects with the larger human need to express. Some big questions that may have influenced this cultural work include: What is the importance of masculinity to human culture during the twenty-first century? How has social media influenced the values of those in the twenty-first century, specifically Generation Z, compared to past generations? Why does society focus on categorizing people into group personas instead of individual personalities?
