Applied Humanities Project Part One
Claude Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" was painted in the late 19th century and is famous
for its vivid portrayal of a misty sunrise at Le Havre's harbor. It's part of the Impressionist art
movement, known for its detailed imagery and use of color to capture feelings. On the other hand,
"Guernica" by Pablo Picasso was created in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. It's a huge
painting that shows the devastating bombing of Guernica. It's a powerful symbol against
violence and tyranny, using black and white colors to express strong emotions.
The theme I've chosen is how art can make us feel things deeply. Monet's "Impression,
Sunrise" and Picasso's "Guernica" both touch on how we see and understand things. Monet's
painting shows the changing light on water, emphasizing how our perception of nature is
subjective. In contrast, Picasso's "Guernica" depicts the harsh realities of war, revealing the
brutal side of the world. Both artworks explore how we interpret and experience the world, one
through the beauty of nature and the other through the brutality of conflict.
I connect with the theme of art's emotional impact because I've felt how art can stir strong
feelings and help me understand things better. One artist painting made me see how beautiful the
world can be while the other painting was a rememberanced of how ugly we make the world to
be.
One profession that may be impacted by my theme is the military. I have been in the
military for a few years now and the painting called “Guernica” by Picasso. It was created as a
response to the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Understanding
the concept of war is a scary thing, and its a scary thing nobody wants to be a part of.
My first source is called "The appropriation of an icon: Guernica remade" By Alister
Wedderburn. It's a tapestry created by South African women based on Picasso's "Guernica." They
used it to talk about the impact of AIDS, especially on women. This artwork helps us understand
how regular people's voices are often overlooked in global issues, like HIV/AIDS. My second
source called, Impressionism (painting style). By Kennedy, Adrienne" expressing about the artist
life and meaning behind his artwork. The third source is called, "Guernica: Horror and
inspiration" by Richard Rhodes. The writer explains how the devastating effects of the
unselective firebombing of a small Basque town in the Spanish Civil War served as the
inspiration for Pablo Picasso's renowned artwork, "Guernica."
Claude Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" was painted in the late 19th century when artists
were shifting away from traditional, highly detailed art to capture moments and the effects of
light in a more immediate way. It represents this change in art.Picasso's "Guernica" was created
in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, a time of intense conflict. The painting shows the horrors
of war and the suffering it causes to regular people. It's important because it's a strong anti-war
statement and a reminder of the human cost of conflict.
Claude Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" and Picasso's "Guernica" are very different in what
they show. Monet's painting is about the beauty of a calm sunrise, focusing on how light and
colors change in nature. Picasso's "Guernica," on the other hand, is a very sad and intense
painting. It depicts the suffering and chaos caused by war, with images of people in pain and a
wounded horse. So, Monet's work is all about the beauty of nature and light, while Picasso's
painting is a strong statement against war, showing how it hurts regular people. They have very
different themes and messages. While "Impression, Sunrise" celebrates the beauty of the natural
world and the play of light, "Guernica" shows the brutality of war and highlights the suffering
inflicted on innocent civilians. These two artworks differ significantly in their themes and
messages. You can find information about these paintings in art history sources. For example,
they explain that "Impression, Sunrise" is a classic example of Impressionist art, which is all
about showing light. "Guernica" is famous for being against war and having strong images. For
more details reading more of "Guernica: Horror andi nspiration" by Richard Rhodes.
In Monet's "Impression, Sunrise," he used colorful oil paints to capture the fleeting
beauty of changing light. It's like freezing a specific moment in time. On the other hand,
Picasso's "Guernica" also used oil paints, but in black and white. This choice, combined with
bold, emotional brushwork, conveys the pain and chaos of war in a powerful way. In short, both
paintings use oil on canvas, but they use it in different ways to convey their themes. Monet's
"Impression, Sunrise" shows the beauty of light and its fleeting nature. Picasso's "Guernica" also
uses oil on canvas, but it strongly portrays the sadness and horror of war. This shows that oil on
canvas can be versatile in expressing various emotions in art.
My thesis is that both Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" and Picasso's "Guernica" use art to
express strong emotions, with Monet celebrating light's beauty and Picasso condemning the
brutality of war, showing how art can connect with people on a deep level.
The ideal audience for my presentation would be artists, students, and individuals
interested in the emotional and thematic power of art. I selected this audience because they are

likely to appreciate the depth of the artworks and the significance of the themes explored in the
presentation.
To make the presentation suitable for art lovers and students, I'll dive deep into the art
techniques and themes in both Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" and Picasso's "Guernica." I'll
explain how Monet used light and how Picasso used shapes and colors. I'll also talk about the
time when these paintings were made, like the Impressionist movement and the Spanish Civil
War, so the audience can better connect with the artworks.
