Make sure you clearly justify your decision using details about the specific model/theory/approach** (20 points) A. Nick is a 2-year-old in your toddler classroom. He lives with his mother and two older brothers. Currently they are living with friends after the family was evicted from their apartment. They hope to have more permanent housing, soon. Nick is a warm and loving student who especially enjoys adult attention. Although Nick is very social with teachers
and other adults, he is interested in peer interactions. He often tries to initiate interaction with peers by knocking their materials over or taking something from them. Nick also has trouble finding activities during self-directed times of the day and will often remain close to teachers without engaging with materials. Nick’s favorite time of the day is visiting the motor room, where he climbs, rides tricycles, jumps and runs. He also enjoys helping work in the school’s vegetable garden, and spends a great deal of time watering the plants, weeding the garden bed, and hunting for worms on the playground that he can add to the garden’s soil. As Nick’s mom looks for new housing, she is exploring preschool options in her potential new neighborhood. She is thinking of moving near a community school that uses Montessori practices. She asks you if you think this might be a good choice for Nick. Do you think it will be a good match? If so, please explain why. If not, please think of another model or educational approach/theory you think might be beneficial for Nick. Be sure to address all potential benefits and/or challenges. Quotation Identification – Answer Both (10 points each) Read the quote and: A. Identify who wrote this statement B. Explain the meaning of the statement 25-50 words C. Describe why it is representative of the individual who wrote it and how it fits into the individual’s overall philosophy approximately 100 words 1. As soon as we become conscious of our sensations we tend to seek or shun the things that cause them, at first because they are pleasant or unpleasant, then because they suit us or not, and at last because of judgments formed by means of the ideas of happiness and goodness which reason gives us. These tendencies gain strength and permanence with the growth of reason, but hindered by our habits they are more or less warped by our prejudices. Before this change they are what I call Nature within us. Everything should therefore be brought into harmony with these natural tendencies, and that might well be if our three modes of education merely differed from one another; but what can be done when they conflict, when instead of training man for himself you try to train him for others? Harmony becomes impossible.” 2. “With the advent of democracy and modern industrial conditions, it is impossible to foretell definitely just what civilization will be twenty years from now. Hence it is impossible to prepare the child for any precise set of conditions. To prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities; that his eye and ear and hand may be tools ready to command, that his judgment may be capable of grasping the conditions under which it has to work, and the executive forces be trained to act economically and efficiently.” SECTION 3 Pick-a-Quote (15 points) approximately 200 words
Choose a quotation from one of the class readings or lecture slides that you particularly enjoy. In a few sentences, interpret what the quote is saying and the theoretical perspective of the author. Then explain how this quote reflects your own personal teaching philosophy and how it might influence your practice with children and/or families.
