propelled myself above others. This essay will center around my fundamental values and why they are my top-tier. I will guide you through my experiences that have molded my character and left me with these three values and a sense pride.
Accountability is a universal core value. It can mean reliability, responsibility, as well as integrity. This specific value is at the top of my list because it integrates with so many sublevel values and can easily be applied to any ethical situation. A moment that stays with me is from last year when I received a phone call from a colleague. I could have chosen to ignore the call, but I have always told people to reach out to me if they ever needed anything. To keep the story brief, this person had a drinking problem
and consumed so much alcohol that they began vomiting blood. I took them to the hospital and convinced them that their drinking was an issue and that they needed to seek help. A month later, they started rehab and have remained sober since, beginning a new chapter in his life. There is no telling what might have happened down the road if I had never held to my word and ignored that phone call.
Related to the value of accountability is open-mindedness and the willingness to be open to new
ideas and perspectives without judgment. To me, this is a pillar of a core value, serving as a reminder to always be understanding of one's culture, viewpoint, and experiences, while being flexible in situations

that happen in your everyday life. What I've learned over the last five years as a Security Forces member is that there is always a gray area that you will work in. As a seasoned airman, I am expected to be knowledgeable in many areas of my career field, but the one that imprints on me is when I must be an on-scene commander. I have learned that not everyone operates at the same high level as I do and that I need to give them tasks that complement their abilities and be open to the idea that as an on-scene commander, the plan I have may not be sufficient, and others might have the right way to accomplish the goal.
Being accountable and open-minded aren’t the only values
principles that I hold as top-tier values. Grit is also among them. I believe that only a small percentage of the population understands and values the true meaning of grit: the unwavering drive to persevere against tough odds, the ability to accept and truly learn from their failures, and the mental toughness to keep going even when the body no longer wishes to continue. Twice in the past year, I have experienced what grit truly means. Once was when I was competing for the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge, and most recently, when I had to transition from living at sea level In Sicily to completing long military operations in the Wyoming mountains. For two days in the middle of summer, when it exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit completed 11 sets of 10-meter sprints in 35-42 seconds, chin-up holds for 65-86 seconds, a 1000-meter run in 2:50 or less, a 100-meter swim in my military uniform, marksmanship, and finally, a 12 km ruck in under 2 hours. This achievement earned me one of the six gold medals out of 150 other competitors. The most recent experience was when I traveled back to the States for training. Nobody had prepared me for how rigorous training at that altitude would feel on my lungs. The common combat load can range from 68 pounds to 120 pounds, depending on your role in your team and what is required to carry for your task. For two weeks, I had to mentally battle my body as we rucked through the mountains, carrying our load-
outs, people, and equipment. If I never had never understood or had an example of grit, I probably

would have given up or taken an easier path in the moment. However, I am thankful that I know the definition of grit.
In embracing the core values of accountability, open-mindedness, and grit from my perspective, it becomes abundantly clear how impactful these three values have been in my life. I took you through some of my life’s recent challenges that I felt encircled these values from my perspective. It is important to remember that core values don’t always have to be a way of thinking but a way of action. It is in this unwavering commitment that we find the essence of personal growth, resilience, and the power to forge
a future brimming with possibilities.
