Reflect on your original post during Workshop One regarding your three goals for the course and/or your three
life wishes. Consider what you’ve learned or accomplished during this course and any movement toward your
goals and wishes. Post a reflection on your progress and future plans:
At the beginning of this course, I did not really think this class could help me much. In the line of work I am in,
the best knowledge comes from being hands on and "in the thick of it" yourself. There are not many books out
there that are teaching tools for serving the humans in our communities.. Or so I thought. This class changed my
mind set on that topic and my opinion of this being accurate. This class has opened my perspectives on "being on
the other side of the desk", and humbling opening my eyes to realizing that all of us have asked for help before. If
not asking from family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, then maybe the government too. Learning how to be
empathetic without being sympathetic is very important, and the interviewing in this class taught me the
importance of difference here. Having empathy is showing the Client you have been there and understand the
why behind how they feel when describing the issues they face because you have been there before yourself.
Showing the Client sympathy however, often comes off as "looking down upon" or "feeling sorry for" them. This
attracts bad energy and mis conveys the intentions of the worker. My goals from Workshop One were: a) Demonstrating good healthy listening skills to deeper understand Client's issues to assist them in creating
game plans in moving forward for their health.
b) Happiness: learning how to better understand Client's issues/what they need to be happy.
c) Living a life worth living: Succeeding in transforming my community's residents in their lives with empathy
when they ask for help and being the example of humility and humbleness. I learned so much more than I imagined I would from this class, on all three of my goals. The level of
professionalism that comes with human services is often unnoticed. The public doesn't often pay attention to
how we hear the words they say by going off of their body language when they are saying the words. How to
open ourselves completely to pay attention and give the Client the attention they deserve in their time of
desperation. Learning how to fully listen to someone was not something I thought was an area I needed to learn
more things in, before this course. How important it is each step of the client interview process really is, for them
to get the help they need.

What a post, I think this class surprised us all how much we can obtain from these past five weeks. It was a
great learning class on information and self-evaluation. It was stuff I needed to learn about myself, and this
class helped me out a lot. Thanks for your post it was great to share some growths.
