Option 1: Google <California Washington mural>. You will find numerous reports concerning a
California school district that voted to paint over a mural in the high school. The
Life of Washington
was painted by Depression-era artist Victor Arnautoff.
There was an argument stated that the mural is violent and featuring slaves. It was up for argument whether it should be covered up or not because it is displaying the colonist observing the body of the indigenous people. What message do you think the artwork conveys?
We need to know what the artist was thinking while painting this mural because this will give us more understanding from where this painting was inspired. The author of our textbook mentions that one should be sensitive to the context to fully understand the purpose of the painting (Facione and Gittens, 2015). This painting shows that darker side of Washington different than what we Do you think the message is vague?
This mural is not vague because while observing this painting it gives us many details about the things that was happening to the people of color during that ear and how hard it was for them to live and survive in that ear. In my article, they have clearly stated that this mural is very racial, and many individuals believe that it is giving wrong information to today’s generation (“The Radical History of the Murals at George Washington High School,” 2023b).
Do you think the message is ambiguous?
It is very hard to talk about ambiguity about this mural because of the different messages being portrayed in this painting. Many people from different background may take this painting in different way because they might think that the painter is insulting them and making fun of their ethnicity. What do you think should be done with the artwork? Why?
According to my research, this painting does make a huge impact in George Washington High School. This may affect the thinking and interpretation of the racial background may be different
for the faculty and students at the high school. In my opinion, the decision of removing the painting should be of the employees and students at the high school because they have right to put their argument up for consideration. Yes, it does not correlate with the things we teach our students and children in today’s century but it tells us the history and shows us the struggle of the
people of color. Facione, P. A., & Gittens, C. A. (2015). THINK Critically (3rd ed.). Pearson Education (US).
