broadened my knowledge regarding cultural and societal aspects of works where I now possess the ability to observe creative works from both an interpretive and objective view. I have gained from this course the concept of layers of meaning in creative works. From this concept, I have been able to think differently about all creative works I view, desiring to observe, ask questions, research, and come to conclusions/interpretations regarding the piece I’m interested in. Usually, I feel better connected with both the artist and their work once I incorporate the layers of meaning processes. Something that I think differently now than when I began this course (mainly due to discovering more layers of the creator and their work) is the artwork of artists such as Norman Rockwell, Vincent Van Gogh, and Andy Warhol. I took art for many years in school and although I learned their names and viewed their artworks, I never dissected their pieces to find hidden meanings relating to their life and society of the times. Through discussions with peers, I could view artists' famous and not-as-well-known art pieces and learn the stories behind them and why the artists made these creative works. For example, I would have never known about the meaning behind Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans being that Warhol painted the art to criticize the mass consumerism in American culture if it weren’t for reading a peer’s discussion post pertaining to the topic. I believe forms of creative expression would assist minors who suffer from mental health issues and special needs. My mother is a special education teacher and I hear her stories each day of children suffering from disabilities and mental health problems such as depression and ADHD who become more vibrant and focused when performing creative activities such as drawing, painting, writing, singing, and dancing. Unfortunately, each year many more students are becoming unfocused and distracted in class, and oftentimes drop out or refuse to learn and as a result their academics are failing. By incorporating art into these student’s lives, “... not only makes the activity less intimidating, but it also enables it to be a
creative outlet, making room for inspiration to thrive..Art therapy combines art-making with applied psychological theory and is an artistic healing method for people struggling with sickness, disability, mental health, and other challenges'' (Covey). I truly believe that by having students express themselves through different mediums of art, they will become more inspired to learn in the classroom and feel calm and centered for a moment regarding their special needs. Because of this course, I can observe creative pieces from a creative standpoint and attempt to make a change in my local community. Now, I can enlighten others and learn more about the mediums of many creative works. I have a deeper appreciation for all creators who have blessed the world with their creative works big and small.
