3 - What is your overall assessment of the course? What are its strengths? In what ways might it be improved? In answering this question, you might address the value of readings and assignments, the structure of the course, the contribution of the course to your knowledge of the subject matter and to the development of your
analytical and reasoning skills, etc. We encourage you to use specific examples where possible.
- It's a pretty good course, though a vast amount of material is covered in too short a time.
- The course was extremely interesting. The instructor consistently engaged students, encouraging a high level of engagement, reasoning, and articulation of our ideas. The instructor modeled articulating responses consistently. This helped me understand how to better organize and express my ideas.
Discussions were encouraged and were the basis of my learning the material.
Readings and assignments were pertinent, engaging, helpful for understanding the material and completing coursework. I am more than satisfied with the way the structure of the course developed analytical and reasoning skills.
- It was the most enlightening of all the college courses I've ever taken. As I don't have any western art background, basically every class provides me with a profound
learning process. Through reading the materials provided by Professor Oryshkevich and her insightful guidance in class discussions, each course enriched and fully exercised my analytical ability in art. For some works that are difficult to understand, Professor Oryshkevich always introduces the background and some internal academic viewpoints of art history to help the class come up with our own opinions. In my opinion, the most commendable part of this class belongs to Professor Oryshkevich's perfect mastery of the content, while supporting everyone's freedom to speak out their own opinions and evidence, and giving professional guidance.
- This was a good course. I learned a lot about art and have a new way of thinking about why modern art is composed in the way that it is. I think it could be improved by having assignments with due dates located in the module. It helps to stay organized and not miss assignments and due dates.

12 - Please comment on any outside events or resources your instructor incorporated into the course. (Examples include trips to museums or festivals, to the theatre or opera, or referrals to any digital materials available online or in a library.)
- Because we are an online course, we haven't organized any offline activities. However, Professor Oryshkevich always encourages students in New York to go to the Metropolitan Museum and other museums to experience the works included and not included in the course, to practice their visual analysis ability and get a more comprehensive feeling. Secondly, she introduced and provided us with a lot of reading materials provided by Columbia University on the core curriculum and works of professors from other departments, helping us to understand specific historical environment and have a more comprehensive understanding of artistic works and different views.
- There were no external resources extended to me since I am in Oregon.

14 - What units on the syllabus were the most engaging to you, and why? And did they contribute to your understanding of the goals of the course?
- All the units were connected in a coherent way so each part built on the previous. It was all very interesting and useful as well as presented in an engaging way.
- The setting of each unit in this course provided me with a complete understanding of the meaning and evolution of the core curriculum, as well as its early history and people's practice and modification under different environments.
- The Warhol, Basquiat section was the most engaging to me. There were fun videos to watch and the discussions were stimulating. It was interesting to learn about pop art and how artists shifted their agendas from the ways of the Academy. It gave me a broader understanding of how art was viewed in competitive ways in antiquity and how those ideologies no longer carry the same importance today.
15 - What units were less engaging to you, and why? Did they still contribute to your understanding of the goals of the course?
- I feel enaging in every Unit. At the same time, through Professor Oryshkevich's introduction of Western art and history, I understood and recognized the purpose and significance of this course as part of the core curriculum.
- The Bernini section was less engaging to me because we didn't cover enough of the materials or focus on it for our assignments but it still contributed to my understanding of the concepts I was being shown.
16 - Please evaluate your instructor. What are the instructor
¶
s strengths? In what ways might his or her teaching be improved? In answering this question, you might address the clarity of the lectures or presentations and their relationship to the other elements of the course, the ability of the instructor to generate enthusiasm and facilitate discussion, the quality of feedback, availability, the timeliness of the return of assignments, etc.
- The instructor is very knowledgeable and the class is rigorous.
- The instructor did a phenomenal job of engaging students in discussion, generating interest and enthusiasm, modeling good articulation of ideas. Workload was appropriate and manageble. The structure of the course and materials were engaging and supported my learning the subject extremely well. Students participated to a high degree, building a sense of collaboration in the class.
- Professor Oryshkevich showed all her enthusiasm in this course. I think both the class discussion and the feedback about our assignment can show her attention and concern for this course. Her excellent teaching mode helped us learn the course content well and accumulate relevant experience and elements beyond the content.
- The instructor was very knowledgeable about art and did a good job of leading the class into stimulating discussions. She would ask us thought provoking questions that would get the class involved as we would input our own personal perspectives before she would circle back to the questions and provide more thorough answers.
