The Assignment for Module 2 includes two short-answer questions. Answer the questions based on the assigned lesson. Do not use outside sources. Question 1- Source Analysis:
Complete the following source analysis questions by analyzing the “School Begins” cartoon and more specifically the scene with the Native American sitting on the other side of the “classroom.”
What is the historical context of that scene? In other words, what was the U.S. policy toward Native Americans in the mid to late 19

century? Did most Native Americans have the right to vote? Were they citizens? (Remember that the cartoon was created in 1899, so what happened afterwards cannot help us understand Dalrymple’s message.)

The U.S. policy toward Native Americans in the mid 19
th
century is the Dawes Act. This act required Native Americans to convert themselves to Christianity or to becoming more
like Americans. The Dawes Act also promised U.S. citizenship to Native Americans who also had the allotment policy and adopted the habits of a more ‘civilized life’. This also means they were inhabited the rights to vote. I would not say that all Native American’s we’re automatically granted citizenship and the right to vote, you can see how this can emerge havoc. They assimilated as many Native Americans as they could into lands that we’re sold for cheap but had strict contract attached to them, land that was not sold was later declared ‘surplus land’. Why did Dalrymple include the image of the Native American “student” in his cartoon? How does the scene of the Native American “student” help Dalrymple convey his main message of the

cartoon as a whole? Describe specifics symbols used to help support your analysis. (Hint: Dalrymple’s main message is mentioned briefly above and in greater detail in the lesson.) -
Dalrymple included the image of the Native American “student” in his cartoon to further highlight these injustices and represent the idea of forced adaption through the establishment of Indian boarding schools. This occurred when Native American children were taken away from their families and forced to adopt European-
American cultures and values. This was applied to students who were either born into the society or those who adapted to the allotment policy and adjusted to the habits of a more civilized or Americanized life due to the implementation of the Dawes Act. By placing the Native American student on the other side of the classroom, Dalrymple further exemplifies the separation or exclusion Native Americans had faced within the educational system in the 19
th
century. -
To explain, Dalrymple’s inclusion of the Native American’s presence in the cartoon represents his attempt in understanding Native Americans into society while disregarding their unique heritage and traditions. To additionally add, the symbols in the scene further contribute to the analyzation and can vary person to person. To me, what stuck out was the feather headdress worn by the Native American student.
This is recognizable considering it’s a symbol of the Native American culture. The presence of the feather headdress in the cartoon undermines and exhibits the attempt to deprive Native Americans of their cultural identities and forcing them to adopt other norms.

Question 2 – Connect: Base your answer to this question on the two assigned readings within the lesson – the interview with a Yale Professor and the blog on Hawaiian Food. (Note: Hawaii itself is part of the U.S.)
What did Freedman mean by when he said there are “three characterizes of American cuisine” are “regionalism, standardization, and variety”? How did each change over time? Does Hawaiian
cuisine, as discussed in the PBS article, go along with Freedman’s definition of American cuisine? Explain your answer. -
Freedman meant that unlike other nations we do not have a vast variety of dishes that we have come up with ourselves, we implement other societies into our culture and sometimes build upon that. In other words, an American restaurant can consist of many foods and like Freedman stated, “one of the things that sets American cuisine apart is eclecticism and experimentation, not obedience to tradition or rules.”. He also states that the best way to understand America and its cuisine is to compare it to its regions. Regionalism like these characteristics of American cuisine have faded overtime, but there
are still some areas that specialize in these topics that remain. Processed industrial food and standardization of American taste are what led to the fall of regionalism in foods. When talking about standardization, food companies and even restaurant industries offer variety as replacement. Hawaiian cuisine does not go along with Freedman’s definition of
American cuisine because they have more traditional values. Even though, Hawai’i include some aspects such as regionalism and sometimes implement other societies and cultures into their food, they stick with those foods for generations and eat only what they
have/ are provided/offered, not what they can. To put gently, they don’t have a variety which forced them into standardization, not that they care, I mean, would you?
