I am an African-American male who was born and raised in the inner city. I grew up in a broken home with a father who had a substance abuse issue. Although my mother worked hard to raise my siblings and I to be respectful and productive members of society, I saw that plenty of children in my neighborhood was not as privileged to have a strong parent as we were. I witnessed friends of mine growing up in households where the mother was never there and a father they never knew. In addition, these children were forced to fend for themselves. I will never forget a childhood friend of mine who lived on the same street as I did. He too was raised with no father, but unlike us, his mother was an alcoholic. I remember times when
we had to walk my friend to the corner bar to ask his mother for something to eat, or at times just
to make sure she would be able to make it home alright. Needless to say, my friend had a rough life, but he overcame all of the obstacles in his life to also work in the social services field.
I experienced and witnessed the hardships of growing up in a broken home, the barriers that were placed in front of the children. I immediately wanted to help this population whether it was helping single parents find resources in the community to ease their load, or doing the more difficult part of the job and placing children in a safer environment while the parent takes the step to improve their situation for them to be reunited with their children.
Pursuing my masters in social work will enhance my understanding of the field. This will
in turn help me further my career in the social services field. I have a passion for helping children who are not as fortunate as others. I plan to use my education to help those who cannot help themselves. My ideal career would be working in the social services field in the inner city. This, in my opinion is where the most help is needed. I wouldn’t mind working in the public-

school system or in a city, state, or government social services position. I see myself in a situation where I am hands on. I want to be on the front line making a difference in the lives of these families.
I realize as an African American male in addition to being in the social services field, I can be a role model for inner city youth. By enrolling in Fordham’s MSW online program, it will
allow me to focus on particular areas of study. My area of interest would be Individuals and Families. I perceive that when you are passionate about your field of work, and have the education as well, there is no limit to the type of impact that can be made in the profession.
I chose distant learning because this is also how I earned my undergraduate degree in Human Services. I am a 41-year-old married father of three. I work full time and it would be difficult for me to travel to a campus and take classes. I enjoy the convenience of getting a top-
notch education while I still can be able to be a fulltime parent and continue to be gainfully employed.
