3.
Describe the value of the diverse perspectives demonstrated in the chosen creative works. Both pieces I selected to explore the topic of police brutality exemplify diverse perspectives. This
is important, because the topic means different things to different races or segments of the population. For example, this topic is of particular importance and interest to minority or disadvantaged populations, both of which report higher rates of experiencing brutality at the hands of the police. Diverse perspectives are important, as we live in a multicultural world and nation, and understanding and empathizing with one another is essential.
4.
Describe potential biases and assumption
s
present in the creative works in relation to the topic.
These vulnerable populations can have biased opinions, based on both their personal experiences and the shared experiences of their families and communities. This bias can spill over into interactions with ALL of the men in uniform, causing people to incorrectly assume that every officer and interaction could leave to violence or mistreatment. Majority populations, many of whom have never had any negative encounters with the police, may assume that the victims of such acts were deserving or that they provoked the incidents themselves. Their privilege and inexperience could cause them to be biased, on the side of the police.
Part Two: Self and Society
1.
Describe how the creative works create meaning surrounding the topic.
In using a tangible, multimedia display, the artist of The American Monument gives audible and visual examples of the effects of police brutality. The artist creates meaning through shock value
in this display. On the cover of the March 1999 issue of the New Yorker, the artist creates meaning to the topic by using satire. The depiction of the police officer shooting at black cut out targets suggests the unfair and disproportionate number of acts of violence against people of color. The artist creates meaning by suggesting that the police have shameless disregard and no fear of consequence in harming these populations.
2.
Describe how the creative works have impacted society’s perception of the topic. The creative works impact society’s perception of the topic by shedding light on a subject that some people are unfamiliar with. It serves to educate and inform those who may never witness the problem firsthand. It impacts society’s perception through educating them on a topic they may not have otherwise been aware of.
3.
Describe how the creative works might be perceived by different groups of people. Different groups will undoubtedly perceive these works differently. Impoverished or minority people will understand the work, and likely agree that it is indeed a real and very serious issue. White or privileged individuals may not be aware of what is going on, due to lack of experience or belief that this is a real issue and may perceive the problem as being blown out of proportion.
4.
Explain how the creative works influence the development of empathy regarding the topic.
Both pieces can evoke empathy by their shocking displays. People are made aware of the graveness of the issue in viewing the multimedia presentation, and also in looking at the artwork
of the magazine. In seeing how serious and impactful these issues are, empathy and understanding are developed.
5.
Explain how the creative works encourage critical thinking regarding the topic. Both creative works encourage critical thinking by broaching an uncomfortable topic. When viewing the mounds of evidence as well as listening to the audio recordings, one is left to wonder why, and how, this keeps happening, and what can be done to stop it. The cartoon depiction also encourages critical thinking by presenting the viewpoint that police have wanton disregard for the safety of minority populations.
