HUM 102 Module Five Project Draft Template Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Part One: Choose the Creative Works Already drafted in Modules Two and Four Part Two: Self and Society Already drafted in Module Four Part Three: Identity and the Humanities 1. Describe the relationship between the humanities and self-identity. The study of humanities gives opportunities for people not only to learn more about their own heritage and culture, but also other cultures as well. When someone watches a film or reads a book with similarly cultured characters, the individual can understand how their way of life shaped their identity. When an individual enjoys movies with characters who are different, they can an understanding of foreign cultures and view the human side of different races and cultures of people. 2. Describe sociocultural factors that influence identity construction. Sociocultural factors that influence someone’s identity can be place of birth, family structure, or religion. Family structure and religion can influence a person's values and opinions and beliefs. Place of birth can also shape someone’s identity, given them unique customs, languages, and opinions. Other more economic factors, such as quality of education and healthcare or socioeconomic status can shape identity by influencing what is important and giving a lower income individual a very different identity than someone with a higher income. 3. Explain how different humanities subject areas can be used to understand one's identity. In viewing art, one can understand another’s interpretation of their identity. Relating oneself to a work of art can instill pride and bring awareness to your history. Watching movies or television with similar characters can encourage empathy, as well as an appreciation for being represented. One can also better understand their identity through music, be it happy or sad, it can be enjoyable to listen to music that is familiar and relatable. 4. Explain how diverse perspectives influence self-concept. Self-concept is not only the set of ideas that one has about one’s own identity, but also depends on the reactions and beliefs of what others think of our identity as well. Diverse perspectives influence this self- concept in helping an individual get a clear understanding of both parts. Familiar artists, movies, and books affirm and educate on cultural and societal norms and can be an encouraging part of forming a positive self-concept. Viewing a variety of media may also further educate someone on how the rest of society views them, good or bad, and can be a positive, or negative, influence of someone’s self- concept.
