Rubric – Fall ‘22
Now that you have completed the investigation, it is time to synthesize (bring together) all the data and observations you have made to create an essential understanding to the guiding question posed at the beginning of the investigation:
How do Earth scientists identify minerals using observable mineral properties?
The lab write-up is a summative assessment to evaluate how well you have developed the scientific skills and concepts outlined throughout the investigation. The following questions are built to help you create a scientific argument. Think of this as an outline to creating a scientific argument paper. Answer each of the following questions with a thoughtful and thorough paragraph in your own words.
1.
Claim
: Create a 2-3 sentence answer to the guiding question above. The short paragraph should directly answer the guiding question and utilize concepts and vocabulary based on what you have learned from the
introductions, the data/observations, and your lab discussion. HINT
: Do not simply restate the guiding question!

2.
Evidence Descriptions
: In 3 or more sentences, directly describe the defining traits for the mineral samples (
Magnetite, Rose Quartz, Specular Hematite
) that will include:
Luster
Bulk color
Streak
Hardness
Cleavage/fracture
Any other notable properties you observed. Insert Answer Here
3.
Interpretation & Justification
: In 4 or more sentences, explicitly discuss how the data/observations from
Question #2 directly supports the claim you created in Question #1. HINT
: Provide the mineral name of samples (
Magnetite, Rose Quartz, Specular Hematite
).
Justify how you used defining/distinctive/notable properties to identify and differentiate the samples
Discuss what observations from each sample from question #2 lead you to your interpretations

4.
Real-World Issues
: Reflect on the process of identifying specific minerals via observable properties. Choose one of the articles linked below that interests you. Skim the article and discuss in 2-3 sentences how the concepts/skills that you learned from the investigation are being utilized to understand a region and/or to advance/protect/affect local and global communities. Do not
simply summarize the article.

Minerals Hint at Liquid Groundwater, More Oxygen in Mars's Past
o
Geological Surveys Unite to Improve Critical Mineral Security
o

Lab Notes
: Insert a photograph of pages (
4-11, 4-13, and
4-14
) from your lab manual. For each photo, make sure:
