Hunter Turmelle Professor Derik Idol Youth 220: Global Youth Culture

The event that I attended for my Youth Culture Experience was a Liberty high school of Bedford football game. I actually attended this game without the intent of my paper but realized that it would count which was funny! I am a community group leader on Commons three floor four and as a leadership team we decided to go to this game as a ministry opportunity. The guys on my hall are all very joyous and energetic which is perfect for a football fan base, and one of the guys is an alumni from this high school and expressed how lost it was. After further research we found out that a majority of the students had experienced trauma in some way whether it be abusive, sexual, or violent. We prayed for this school and then decided to go to their senior night football game because they had never won a game or even scored a single point. When we went the parents were very confused that there were people even cheering but as the game went on all the parents and students joined in with our cheers! This made the football team so hype and they even went on to score their first touchdown of the season! When that happened my hall went crazy and we were yelling encouragement and the team was so happy running over and high fiving us even though the score was 6-49. After the game we rushed the field and threw the players on our shoulders like they had won the game and we encouraged them as brothers in Christ and it was amazing to see the kids happy after a game for once. The principle even came up to us and said we can get free tickets for our whole hall for any game we want just so we can keep giving good encouragement to the players. My hall is currently in prayer for these kids and we hope to disciple and evangelize to that school. With this summary in mind I am reflecting on three questions which are the following: What are three observation of youth culture sticks out to you? Based off of what you learned about status in social systems, how did you see that reflected in youth culture? Explain your level
of motivation to invest into the next generation after your experience? I think that these are all

three easily answered in the reflection above. First, three observations I learned about youth through this experience is that they feed off the environment around them, they are unaware of surroundings, but they are also followers. I tried to pick three things that is about creating a healthy culture and safe space for ministry. The football game was rowdy and yelling at refs was a common occurrence. Their energy was completely based on how energized we were because we were the loudest group. Whatever cheers we did they would copy. I think I learned that in my
ministry I will be extremely focused on the leaders I hire to create a culture while also creating a fun and safe space for them to hang out in. Second, the status in social systems in the youth was very apparent. There were different groups scattered throughout the stands and from what we knew the senior class was the one cheering alongside with us for their football players. I think high school is all about the hierarchy and it was apparent but not to the point of toxicity. Lastly, after this experience I am even more motivated to reach the next generation. The game environment hearing all the parents curse out the ref and the kids following was hard. It made me
think how needed that healthy role models are in kids lives. I can't wait to be more involved with
this high school and I think my entire hall is on board with that. The kids and community of that school are hurting and they need the light of Christ in that place and Commons 3 Floor 4 is going
to be a light for them!
