HUM 100 MODULE 8-2 Short Answer Kristie Pritchard SNHU Undergraduate February 17, 2023 Find a news report about an artifact from the humanities involved in religious controversy. Then, answer the questions below. Next, consider searching the religion section of CNN or similar sources. Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria: 1. Provide a link to the news story and write a summary of each side’s position. For example, how do you think the controversy was impacted by each party's interpretation of this cultural work? https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/why-smiling-statue-satan-stirring-controversy- spain-180971321/  Locals have denounced the statue because its seemingly nice features defy the “repulsive and despicable” (Solly, 2019) appearance typically afforded to the devil. An online petition that has acquired 5,600 signatures to date further argues that “the work is offensive to Catholics because its depiction of the devil glorifies evil.” The artist thought the devil statue would prove less controversial. “It has not been made to hurt anyone’s feelings, quite the opposite: it is designed so that people smile at its side.” What do you see as the main value of humanities in defining ethics? The primary value of the humanities in defining ethics is that it helps create tolerance and understanding between people. In addition, values aid decision-making, especially on the complex ethical issues confronting society (Stenmark, 2015).
How do the humanities impact ethical issues in society today?  The humanities reflect many years and share them through history, literature, philosophy, ethics, religion, languages, archaeology, and all the other areas of thought and culture that make up the record of human activity (F. P. S. 2013). Resources F. P. S. (2013, December 11). The Humanities Belong to Everyone .
