Introduction
Miskasowin is a Cree word that translates to "my way of life," and it encompasses the values, beliefs, and traditions that shape one's identity. Completing the critical self-reflection process has allowed me to
reflect on my own Miskasowin and how it has shaped my identity as it is today. In this essay, I will discuss how my Miskasowin from my early childhood years between 3 and 6 years old and my current Miskasowin relate to three of the seven job skills of the future: emotional intelligence, critical thinking and problem-solving, and creativity.
Job Skill 1: Emotional Intelligence
As a child between the ages of 3 and 6, my Miskasowin was heavily influenced by my family and community. I learned the importance of empathy, compassion, and understanding through the teachings and examples set by my elders. I was taught to be aware of my own emotions and those of others, and to use that awareness to navigate and improve relationships.
As an adult, my Miskasowin continues to emphasise the importance of emotional intelligence in my interactions with others. In my current job as a social worker, I use my emotional intelligence skills to connect with clients, understand their needs, and develop effective solutions to their problems.
Job Skill 2: Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving
From a young age, my Miskasowin taught me to think critically and creatively about the problems I faced. I was encouraged to question and analyse situations and to come up with unique solutions. My family and community placed a strong emphasis on self-sufficiency and resourcefulness, which helped me develop my problem-solving skills.
As an adult, my Miskasowin continues to guide me in using critical thinking and problem-solving skills in my career as a software developer. I frequently encounter complex problems, and I am able to approach
them in a methodical and creative way, utilising the skills I developed in my childhood.
Job Skill 3: Creativity
As a child, my Miskasowin encouraged me to express myself through various forms of art, such as storytelling, drawing, and singing. I was taught to think outside the box and to use my imagination to create something new.
In my current job as a graphic designer, my Miskasowin plays a vital role in my ability to come up with creative solutions for my clients. I draw inspiration from my cultural heritage and my childhood experiences to create designs that are both unique and meaningful. Conclusion
In this essay, I have discussed how my Miskasowin from my early childhood years between 3 and 6 years
old and my current Miskasowin relate to three of the seven job skills of the future: emotional intelligence, critical thinking and problem-solving, and creativity. My Miskasowin has played a significant
role in shaping the person I am today and has helped me develop the skills necessary for success in my career. As I move forward into whatever is next for me after this course, I will continue to draw on my Miskasowin to guide me on my journey.
