The U.S education system, is a system that was created to advance the knowledge of U.S
children. This system strives provide education to every member of the community, no matter
race, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. The U.S educational system is broken down into
three essential parts. Primary school, secondary school, and higher education. Common core
standardized testing is a big component of the U.S education system. Common core is outline,
that lets districts know what students should know in terms of math and English by the end of
each grade level. Common core is a controversial topic, but I believe its intentions are good, but
it could use some updating and clarification. (Marriage, 2019).
In the podcast Michael Barbaro and Campbell Robinson have a conversation about what
has been happening in Bucks County. At the school board meetings, majority of parents of
buck’s county wanted the district to reopen schools without safety measures. These meetings
were heated. Members of the school board address many pressing issues within our society and
education system. While discussing these hot topics a member of the school board John Gamble
received death threats. Paul Martino a hardcore republican as he describes himself, has children
in Bucks County and contributes to PAC. Paul had ulterior motives as he funded PAC he donated
so much money even after he accomplished his goal of reopening schools.
I believe the issues at Central Bucks and many other districts are possible because of
privilege. As stated in the podcast by Campbell Robinson (2021) “Middle and upper middle-class
voters. Predominantly white, but diversifying. Pretty well educated.” The things that were said at
the school board meetings and the Facebook groups were outrages and insensitive. Today in
America where a specific group of people can storm the capital and face little to no
consequences, this speaks volumes. The parents on the Bucks County have a sense of
entitlement. They pressured the school board to reopen schools with an optional masking
3
requirement. This shouldn’t have happened in the end it put so many people at risk and caused
children to be sick. If these school board meetings were held in a predominantly black area, I
believe that those parents wouldn’t have gotten their way so easily. There wouldn’t be false
propaganda being spread. The school board meetings in Bucks County are an example of white
privilege, these parents feel that if they just scream irate things and pressure those in charge that
they can have their way and that is not the way the world should work.
