Proposal Outline:
Indian Horse written by Wagamese, Richard
Working title:
Indian Horse: Racism, The Destroyer of Hope
Essay Question that will be answered through close reading, analysis and research:
Which sociocultural factors play a role in the loss of hope, as it pertains to Saul Indian Horse?
-
Racism?
-
Poor living conditions?
-
Substance abuse?
-
Mental health/PTSD/Trauma?
Working hypothesis:
Racism plays the largest role in destroying Saul’s hope, as racism is the mechanism that propels all the
other risk factors in his life (ie. abuse, substance abuse, intergenerational trauma)
Outline of arguments, including tentative topic sentences:
Topic sentence one:
Saul’s resilience and ability to cope with his environment
A first line of argument will examine the role that hope plays for Saul resiliancy and ability to cope with
his environment, and will question the cultural/social/political factors that relate to the loss of hope for
many indigenous people, including Saul himself.
2
Topic sentence two:
How Saul’s ability of hockey served as a shimmer of hope but was quickly
diminished
My second line of arguments will discuss how hockey initially served a beacon of hope for Saul, who
used it as an outlet for coping with the trauma of residential school. However it was quickly extinguished
due to the pervasive racism against Indigenous people in Canadian society during that time.
Topic sentence three:
The role of intergenerational trauma and Saul turning towards substances to
combat his depression and trauma
My final argument will discuss the role of intergenerational trauma, as Saul falls deep into hopelessness,
substance abuse, and depression.
My main points will be supported using peer-reviewed sources I have taken from the York Library,
Google Scholar, class lectures and the text
Indian Horse
by Richard Wagamese, All of which will be
implemented and cited in the essay. Throughout my essay, I will use rhetorical devices such as symbolism
and foreshadowing. The style of my essay will be formal and composed of an introduction paragraph that
clearly states my hypothesis and gives a brief yet clear overview of my essay. I will then move into my
three lines of support and finish with a concluding paragraph, outlining final thoughts and encapsulating
the main points of discussion mentioned throughout my paper. Although this is just my essay proposal,
the formatting could be slightly varied when I begin writing my paper.
