Primary Source Summary and Analysis
“A Worn Path” is a short story by Eudora Welty
Copyrighted in 1941 and takes place during that period in Mississippi.
“A Worn Path” tells the journey of an elderly black woman named Phoenix
Jackson who makes her way into town around Christmas time, to get some
medicine at the hospital for her grandson. She is very old, and the journey is full of
obstacles. One obstacle she comes in contact with at one point in her journey, a
black dog appears and, she tries to get it to go away by shooing it but the
appearance of the dog forces her to fall into a ditch. She encounters a white
hunter that helps her, and, in the process, he loses a nickel and she pockets it
before he can see. She finally makes it into town and asks a woman whose
carrying presents to help lace up her shoe for her and the woman does so.
Phoenix arrives at the hospital where she is mistaken for a charity case until a
nurse recognizes her due to the mentioning of her grandson. It turns out that she
regularly makes this journey into town to get some medicine for her grandson,
who swallowed some lye several years ago and remains bedridden as a result.
“A Worn Path is a deeply symbolic story, in which is both literal and metaphorical.
The name Phoenix come from the mythical bird that is often associated with
rebirth and resurrection from its own ashes. The worn path of life has taken a toll
on her, but nevertheless undertakes this journey.
Phoenix is on a quest, and maybe, the quest she is on may not be the search for
medicine for her grandson but for her grandson himself.
