Courtney Owens HUM 1020 Leveled-up Learning Portfolio Self-Evaluation This Learning Portfolio is a self-reflection of everything that I have worked on in this class over the course of the entire semester. This includes not only assignments and activities but also my skills. A self-evaluation of my learning is important in this course to reflect on the way in which every class I attended and participated in helped me both in and outside the course. Upon coming into this course and being introduced to the syllabus I did not know much of what to expect. The teaching style used in this course is very interactive and hands-on, unlike most of my other classes I am taking/have taken. But as the semester progressed, I found the course and the activities very interesting. Looking back onto the site visits and even time in class it feels more like an “experience” rather than class. During class where I would in any other course be lectured and taking notes, we spent time interacting and collaborating with our classmates. I feel like the time we all spent working together in class made our presentation and site visits more comfortable since we have all already spent so much time with one another. I had set a self goal to not miss any classes, but I did end up missing 2. But even with my 2 absences I can say this was not a class I ever missed on purpose, or dreaded coming to. Self Evaluation Skills Inventory
Towards the beginning of this course, all students each filled out a SESI worksheet and wrote about our skills. The point of this activity was to highlight and explain skills we ourselves feel we are confident that we have, and then use our set of skills to be grouped with other students who are similar; either Teaching, Social Media, Create Team, or World Kindness Day. Based on my SESI skills, I was put into the teach team. I found this assignment to be very helpful as a student because I'm not sure if I would pick what group I would best fit in myself if I had to choose on my own. My SESI essay was as follows: After looking over the Self Evaluation Skills worksheet, a skill of mine that I am able to say that I am confident in in my written and spoken communication skills. If I am presenting something that I am confident in and like discussing, I am able to elaborate and explain the topic in a way to make sure that all of those who I am presenting to can understand. I think that it is important to want to make sure all listeners are not confused about anything that is being presented. One past experience of mine which I feel has sharpened my skills in both of these categories as well as allowed me to pick up great habits to use with any written or spoken communication is my aice global perspective project I had to complete my junior year. Global perspectives was a required class that I had to take to earn my Aice diploma. The aice “exam” for this class consisted of a 1,700 word research essay on a chosen topic of a global issue, as well as a recorded presentation on the same topic. For me at the time, this was the longest essay I've written, and the first presentation where I was not able to read any transcript or look at my slides. I had to go through the process of researching a topic, constructing an essay on my research, creating a presentation on my research with reference to my essay, and recording myself presenting the research in class to be sent to the Cambridge graders. In my recording I had to look at the camera, I could not read a transcript, I could not
look at my slides, I could not mess up and start over, and I had to present for a certain amount of time. The recorded presentation taught me about the importance of taking your audience into consideration, eye contact, and knowing 100% what you are presenting. A second skill from the worksheet that I feel I possess is organizational skills. I see this skill within myself the most with school and managing my time. To keep track of my assignments and their due dates, I have a written planner I keep in my backpack all the time. In this planner I write assignments/events as soon as I am given them, so in some subjects I am able to be weeks or even months ahead in my planning. To keep up with what I need to do each day, assignments due dates that are coming up in the current week, and my work schedule, I have a planner/to-do list app on my ipad. This app also allows me to color coordinate assignments/tasks based on level of importance. I find this to be very helpful in day to day management of my time due to convenience, since it is also synced with my phone, and fun tools it offers I can utilize, such as color coordinating assignments and tasks based on importance. As much as I would love to make a firm schedule all the time and stick to it 100%, life is life. This app allows me to not only have access to everything I need to do, regarding school and work, but to also edit my week as needed. The level of importance on assignments allows me to adjust when I plan on doing them if needed, or allows me to see easily with a small visual what I must make sure to get done as soon as I can. The last skill I would say I fit in the category of is “Child Wrangler”. I personally love working with kids, which is why I am pursuing a career as a pediatric nurse. I also babysit 2 kids occasionally for my neighbor, their 9 year old and 5 year old. There is no specific reason why I enjoy working with kids and I couldn't even explain whatever sparking my interest in it. For me it has just always been a thing. I am very close with my little brother, who was born when I was

5. I love being the person at family events who people pawn their babies and toddlers off on (something I know some people hate). Calendar Logs
Week 4: Today we performed various acts of confetti compassion. As a group we went around campus and each did a different act of compassion. In my group somebody held the elevator door open for someone, someone held the bathroom door open for somebody, and somebody else left a sticky note with a positive message in the girls bathroom on the mirror. I picked up a piece of trash from the ground and put it in the recycle bin, and I also paid for somebody's drink at Starbucks. Doing these things made me feel good, and it makes me want to incorporate more acts of sporadic kindness into my everyday life. Week 5: Today in class we did two activities that I feel impacted me in a very positive way; saying kind things to the other members of our group and also saying kind things about ourselves. Doing both of these made me feel good about what I was saying. When saying kind things to others, it's great to see their happy reaction to your comments. Saying kind things about myself also made me feel confident in myself because I said them out loud to the group. I feel like saying the "I am..." reinforced the idea in my own mind, making me truly believe it. Week 6: Today in class one thing we did was create images of fairytales using only shapes and colors. My group chose Rapunzel. This taught me about the feelings that different colors and shapes can portray and cause the audience to feel. This could be applied in the create team by using light and muted colors in their presentation, to convey feelings of peacefulness and comfort. Doing this activity with my group (teach team) also was a great bonding activity since we all had to agree on which shapes and colors to use for each part of the image. Activities getting us to work together are important since we will need to be able to communicate comfortably with one another from this point forward. Week 8: Although I was not in class today, I did utilize a skill learned from a previous lesson
recently. At my job, Target, all employees were given a free cart full of groceries and other essential items. While it was a nice gesture by the company and I am very grateful for how they are treating their employees during this time, I know my family is in a better position currently than some people. I know that there are plenty others that need them more than us, so I decided to donate my share. This sporadic act of kindness made me feel very good . Out of my Calendar Logs there are some skills I talked about that I am doing well on and some I wish to improve. I feel like I am currently doing well displaying acts of kindness, especially

random. I make sure to make an effort everyday, especially at work, to compliment people. A skill I would like to continue to work on to improve is breathing exercises. Although they are simple, after recently experiencing a miscarriage I have noticed I get overwhelmed much more easily, even over simple things. Focusing on my breathing and taking some time out of my day for myself to practice breathing exercises I learned this class can help me recenter and calm myself. I just need to practice more with recognizing in my moment of distress that I need to stop and take a moment for this. Teach Team B-Service Learning Plan on Compassion/Kindness to others Acts of kindness will produce endorphins, which are natural painkillers. Meaning, if you
engage in acts of kindness you will experience less stress and less anxiety and feel good about yourself. To achieve the goal of teaching kindness and compassion to others we want to not only explain the benefits but show and prove the positives that come out of helping others. When we meet with our 6th graders, we will start with a PowerPoint showing a study done on kindness towards others. We will follow that up with activities that engage everyone in the room as a whole group. . Lastly, we will have an activity that the students can do on their own and practice outside of class. If there is time, we will also encourage them to show random acts of kindness throughout the rest of the day. GOAL To teach kindness/compassion and show examples, that the students can take into their daily life We will need a Slides Presentation, with the Rabbit example to demonstrate how a little kindness and compassion can affect someone’s health. Then talk about different ways to share group compassion. Use statistics and facts to keep the presentation very simple but colorful. We will also need to have all our materials with us to demonstrate activities, then break up them into small groups with a beach ball to be passed around. Each person from the teaching team will join a group then after everyone in the small group share, we will combine the four groups into two. Then after about 5-7 shares, we can merge into one large group. Then give candy to those who share and we will go until the students don’t share anymore. Next, we will have students return to their seats, and move into the next activity about confetti kindness. A sticky note activity where each student will write a general kind message and leave it either on their desk or on the door of the class for other students to see. Then discuss if there is time for Kraft’s ideas about Confetti kindness and deep kindness showing the differences with examples and challenging the students to go out and show these examples once a day. We plan to meet once before each time
we are going to present to discuss the material briefly and understand our roles. But also stay connected through text. A presentation is the only thing that needs to be created showing statistics and examples for us to discuss. We want to have our presentation done at least 7 days before we are supposed to present. We as a group are creating the presentation on Thursday 10/20. Timeline: -10/17 Submit final Plan -10/19 Send to other teams -10/20 Meeting w/ Group to obtain and compile information for slides -10/24 Have Finished Slides Approved -10/27 Practice Slides -10/31 Present SUPPLIES: Presentation Shared Beach Ball (Dr. Norcia/Create Team) Sticky Note (Blake/Courtney) Sharpie/Writing Utensil (Blake/Courtney) Expo marker (Create Team) Maybe Large white Paper Candy (Grace) METHOD: To begin we will introduce ourselves to the class and then start our PowerPoint. We estimate the PowerPoint will take around 5 minutes from start to finish. Following the presentation, we plan on letting the students get into 4 groups of 5 two of 6 (2 minutes). We will explain how to play the beach ball game, then let them practice for 3 minutes. Then we’ll lead

them into a group of 11 and have them play the beach ball game for 5 more minutes. After this, we will have all the students go back to their seats and ask if any students want to share something nice they said about another student for a candy prize (3-5 minutes). For the rest of the class, were going to have the students write something nice to someone or something that reflects confetti kindness on a sticky note then have them stick it on the door outside (3-5 minutes). We want to give the students a few extra sticky notes and ask them to hand them out to people or around the school throughout the day(1-2 minutes). We also plan to discuss the difference between confetti and deep kindness challenging the students to do these acts in the next week(3-5 minutes). Then lastly depending on the exact time questions about what we talked about giving candy to those who answer. (Extra time) CONNECTING: In HUM 1020, we learn a lot about kindness and compassion for others. From practicing acts to researching studies, we observe kindness in every class. We learn things like Confetti and deep kindness which we hope to teach to the 6th graders in the lesson. In the article we read in class “Deep Kindness” by Houston Kraft they define Confetti Kindness as “Simple and confetti- like actions of Kindness are a piece of the puzzle, but they aren’t the whole picture.” (page 11) In our lesson, we plan to educate the students on what we've learned about kindness and compassion derived from a lesson we were also taught. This will allow us as students to gain an even greater understanding of being kind. In class, we dedicated time to performing 5 acts of kindness which taught us things that we could do that caused no harm but might make someone else's day a little brighter. If time permits, we plan to allow the students to go around campus to perform small acts of kindness. This will allow the students to practice kindness. Compassion is also an essential aspect of our topic in this teaching time. In class, we listened to “Empathy in the
Digital Age” by TEDxYouth with Katri Saarikivi. She spoke to us about caring for others' feelings but through a Neuroscience perspective. Since we are speaking to middle schoolers who use social media, this video could be shown to them in order to get them thinking about having compassion online. With our knowledge learned in class about kindness and compassion, we hope to educate the youth and have an impact on how to treat others. Work Cited Kraft, Houston. Deep Kindness. Each of these Site Visit Reflections was written after a visit to St. Xavier Francois School. In these reflections I discuss what I learned, how this visit went, etc. Out of all of the visits as a Teach Team member I will say the skill I feel I developed more during this is my presentation skills. I have done many presentations in the past but being put in front of a completely random audience in person, who is also in a completely different age group than yourself, was a great learning experience. 10-24-2022: On Monday, October 24th, my group, Teach team B, completed our first visit to St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers, Florida. During this visit, we taught Teach Team A’s lesson on self compassion. I enjoyed the experience and feel that I gained useful insight on what to do for the next few weeks' presentations, and ways to improve my future presentations in any situation. I feel as though my group and I did well with understanding the Self Compassion Lesson and presenting it. Sometimes it can be hard presenting a slide show you didnt make, but we looked over it and made a plan for how we were going to present which helped us greatly. Before the visit, while looking over the slide and script and assigned roles to each person in our group. This helped while presenting to avoid any confusion or stalling. Being confident in what we were presenting is important to not only keep the kids attention but also to get them to take us

seriously. Our preparation beforehand was important for us to teach confidently, and we plan to do this again each time we visit. During our presentation, I feel that everything went well. I would say that during some point, we did reach a point where we felt slightly uncomfortable. During the part of the lesson that included the “Good Coach Bad Coach” skit, we had to really work out of our comfort zone. But we still did it and felt our delivery was sufficient to get our point across with it. There were some points where more talking may have been needed to explain a topic, but this was our first time teaching the students so we can just use this experience as learning to better our next visit. This visit taught me how to better prepare for our next presentation, and also how to better our script and slides to help the groups next week teach our presentation. One thing I would do differently next time would be to slightly go off script and elaborate more with our personal knowledge of the topics. More input than what is on the script can always be included and can always help the kids understand the concepts better. \ 10-31-2022: Our site visited this past Monday, October 31st, our topic to teach was Kindness and Compassion. This was my group's topic, Teach Team B. Our goal was to teach the students about the different types of kindness and why they are all important. We taught Common
Kindness, Confetti Kindness, and Deep Kindness. We taught the types of Kindness by defining and explaining their meanings on our slideshow presentation, and then interacting with the students by asking questions about the types, such as asking them to give an example that they can think of. We included lots of engaging activities and questions because keeping them interacting with the content we are teaching will help them to retain the information. Our main activity was splitting the class into different size groups and doing the beachball activity. During this, the students threw the beachball to another person in their group and said something kind about them. It was a little awkward for them at first, but after a few passes they got comfortable and enjoyed it. We went from groups of 5 to 6 students, to combining the class into 2 big groups. After everyone said something kind and had something kind said about them, we asked them if they wanted to share what they said or something they were told and how it made them feel. We encouraged students to share by passing out candy. Mostly everyone in the class shared so we gave everybody candy. I learned that using multiple engaging activities throughout the lesson and not just one at the end keeps them engaged throughout while also using up all of our time in the class. One thing I say that we should try to do differently is limiting side conversations and keeping the students on track when asking questions because they tend to get loud and distracted very easily. 11-28-2022: Our final visit to St. Francois Xavier School was this past monday, November 28th. During this visit we guided the students as they painted rocks with one word related to something they have learned through our visits. The idea behind this activity is that the students would use these rocks as touch stones, to remind them to continue using the strategies and
concepts we have taught them. After introducing the activity, passing out supplies, and explaining, the students immediately got to work on their rock painting. There was a lot of talk between the students among themselves about what word they were putting on their rock and why. As a student who has been teaching during our visits, it was great to see them reference and conversation about things they learned weeks ago. When working in a group with students painting my own rock, I noticed that you can really see the way that they have become comfortable around us. Our first few visits they were much more quiet and not as willing to participate. But when we got to the final part of our activity where we asked questions and wrote down the students' answers, everyone in my group had something to say. This was also great to see as a teaching team member because when asking them the questions, such as “what would the kindest school look like '' I really got to see the students apply everything they’ve learned in a new way. Having the students apply the concepts to their life and their school is very different for them than example fake sceneries. Of all the visits I feel like this is the one both the teacher team members and students enjoyed the most. We got to interact the most with the students we have taught for the last few weeks during this visit and we also got to feel our impact when we see how much we taught the students. In my experience that was what made this visit the best for me, seeing our impact and knowing we successfully did teach them everything.
