Brian Bachmann Professor Williams Perspectives in Humanity November 4 th , 2023 Select a cultural work from the world around you, one with cultural or historical interest, and briefly describe it in your submission. For my submission I would like to explore the Lisdoonvarna matchmaking festival held in a small town off the west coast of Ireland in County Clare. This long-standing tradition has been around every September since 1857. Willy Daly started this tradition as a way for unsociable farmers to meet suitable wives. What characteristics or elements of the work stand out to you? What stands out to me the most is that In a world where online dating is so prominent, this way of matchmaking is still such a great experience for many singles out there. What do you think the creator intended to express? I feel the creator, Willy Daly, was trying to express a sense of unity and pride for the surrounding community. Were they successful? I think this was successful. Next, select a cultural work that meets the conditions above but is from a culture unfamiliar to you. Reflect on the value or meaning of studying cultural works from different cultures.
I would like to learn more about Scottish culture as well as it is very intriguing. I think studying cultural works unfamiliar to us is very important because it creates additional curiosity and the desire to learn more about each subject and it also helps us to comprehend where people have come from, their traditions and their struggles within a community. How does looking through the lens of the humanities affect your understanding of diverse cultural works and the reasons for their creation? Looking through the lens of humanity we can get a well-founded understanding of the tradition, background and struggles within different communities. How could learning more about cultural works from other cultures equip you with skills or new perspectives for experiences in your life? Learning more about cultural works and different cultural backgrounds can help to make you more compassionate and empathetic by understanding different hardships amongst different cultural backgrounds. According to Sociologist Dr. Caleb Rosado, who specializes in diversity and multiculturalism truly understanding different cultures can make us more respectful towards people and more understanding of different situations and empowers people to strengthen themselves, and others, to achieve their maximum potential.
