2 Issues and Ethics in News and Social Media ABSTRACT Social media platforms and other technology have revolutionized how we communicate with one another and how news is delivered. Unfortunately, social media platforms, and even some news outlets, contain misinformation. In this assignment, you will investigate the role of social media in American news media. You will also reflect on these organizations’ responsibility to provide accurate information. Write a 400- to 600-word paper in which you answer the following:  What role do the following play in contemporary American society?  Traditional news media  Social media  What do you think the news media's responsibility is in providing accurate information to the public?  Are social media platforms responsible for ensuring the content their users share is accurate and factual? Why or why not?

3 ROLES OF TRADITIONAL NEWS AND SOCIAL MEDIA If the basis for the principles of ethical news reporting is giving citizens the information they need to function in a democratic society, then that information must be presented accurately. Journalists should be careful to verify the facts before they report them. Not only should newsroom staff represent a diversity of gender and races, but journalists should also speak for all groups in society. Social Media also has an important role in a contemporary American Society is a bit different than the news attributes. The Internet is slowly transforming the news media because more Americans are relying on online sources of news instead of traditional print and broadcast media. Americans surf the sites of more traditional media outlets, such as NBC and CNN, but also turn to unique online news sources such as weblogs. Websites can provide text, audio, and video information, all of the ways traditional media are transmitted. The web also allows for a more interactive approach by allowing people to personally tailor the news they receive via personalized web portals, newsgroups, podcasts, and RSS feeds.

4 NEWS AND SOCIAL MEDIAS RESPONSIBILITIES Unlike marketing or promotional messages sent directly from an organization, information from news media can have a “third- party endorsement” effect, which enhances its perceived credibility. The media also influence our attitudes, how we think, and even our behaviors. I believe that if the news media holds such a critical place in our society, the information they relay to the people of this country, the news should be nothing but factual statements. The function of media in society has evolved in recent years, especially due to the digitization of messages. Audiences in the past had to rely heavily on mainstream messages that were generated, sent, and controlled by institutions such as corporations and large media outlets. These institutions determined which issues and stories were newsworthy, thus influencing the public’s perception of what was important. The emergence of social media has affected communication patterns in that audiences are now message creators. They also play a more active role in determining which issues are important to cover from a news perspective. However, the basic function of mass media remains the same: to provide audiences with information they need and want to know, for both

5 informative and entertainment purposes. So, are social media platforms responsible for ensuring the content shared is accurate? This is such a hard question to ask, when I am on my own social media account, I believe that I should be able to post whatever I want as long as I’m not trying to sell or deceive another person for personal gain or monetary values. But the profile is an business or influencer I do think that they have a huge impact on the readers or followers of their page, because they look up to that individual, that person most likely would believe or favor their opinion.
