Dancers: Brian Stokes Mitchell and the cast of Ragtime . B. Comments about what makes this dance special: When watching and listening to this dance, I find the cast’s energy very uplifting. They are all dancing and singing with big smiles, while jolting different parts of their bodies around, and the women are flaring their dresses. The music very perfectly matches the vibe of the dancers, a fun song that the actors can move with the music. Brian Stokes Mitchell’s singles were highlights of this musical, especially at the end when he did tricks with his hats and then brought everyone in with him to finish off the dance and sing together. C. Dance Influences 1. Concept Influence - As Stokes Mitchell was the center of attention of the musical, it felt like he would be described as “Juba”. He seemed to be dancing while everyone respected him and kept him in the center to show that he was the best dancer in the circle. Everyone was singing along with him, which made it seem the African dance Juba because one person was in the center of the “circle” of dancers. a. Example in "Getting Ready Rag" Dance: At 2:15 in the dance, Stokes Mitchell comes out and the spot light is on him. Everybody else is singing along in support of him in the background, but it just feels like he is in the center of the circle, like how Juba works. 2. Dance style influence - With a very diverse group of people dancing together, and the title of the dance, I believe that ragtime music can be related to this dance. With the Harlem Renaissance promoting black culture, this style of dancing can likely be accredited to Black culture including ragtime music because of the Harlem Renaissance. b. Example in "Getting Ready Rag" Dance: I believe that all of the dancing is likely byproducts of ragtime music so the time stamp would be the entire dance. 3. Choreographer Influence - John Durang was popular for this energetic dance while also being able to maintain precision in his dances. His style of dances felt very similar to how we can see Stokes Mitchell dancing in his solo parts of the dance. c. Example in "Getting Ready Rag" Dance: At 2:22, you can see Stokes Mitchell having so much energy but also having the ability to keep strict movements and really dance with power. 4. Concepts Influence - The Roaring Twenties Dance Craze. I believe that the Roaring Twenties Dance Craze had an effect on the style of dance in “Getting Ready Rag”.

These dances feature in the video from 5.2 felt very high energy with a lot of movement and a lot of people all dancing together. d. Example in "Getting Ready Rag" Dance: I believe 0:45 is a good time stamp to truly show how much energy was in this dance as well as how many people are all bringing the same energy all together.
