Question 2 The story is told in first person. I didn’t get as much of a feeling of where he lived, but I did get a sense of what kind of person he is. He is a sensitive soul that cares for others and their feelings. He appears to have a good sense of humor. He seems to be a hard worker. He is young and impulsive. He did jump the gun by quitting his job over this situation. Although he knows that times will be tough later, I don’t think that he was all that sad about quitting. The biggest challenge that he may have felt, is his family’s disappointment, since the store owner was such a good friend. He stood up for what he believed in, at least at the time, and can hold his head high for that. Hopefully, he went on to find a better job where people weren’t so judgmental. Question 3 Arnold Friend was a very strange character. Connie’s first encounter with him starts that reaction when he wags his finger at her and says “Gonna get you, baby” (390). Secondly he seemed rehearsed. He has her favorite music on as he drives up to the house and has his name written on the side of his car. He seems almost like a monster or demon. “I ain’t made no plans for coming in that house where I don’t belong but just for you to come out to me, the way you should. Don’t you know who I am?”(398). A lot of what Arnold says and how he acts makes him appear to be mad, rambling on with things that didn’t make sense. “Don’t hem in on me. Don’t hog. Don’t crush. Don’t bird dog. Don’t trail me.” he said in a rapid meaningless voice, as if he were running through all the expressions he’d learned but was no longer sure which one of them was in style, then rushing on to new ones, making them up with his eyes closed (398). Arnold is obviously very convincing and possibly even a little charming, although in a destructive way. He keeps her attention outside of the house and finally is able to get her into the car. Does anyone understand why he asks Connie about the old woman down the road that had died? Is this saying maybe that Arnold may have had something to do with her death? Question #4 “Victor and Thomas Build-the-Fire were the same age, had grown up and played in the dirt together. Ever since Victor could remember, it was Thomas who had always had something to say” (181). The friendship between Thomas and Victor is a strained one, but it seems also spiritual or supernatural. Although Victor doesn’t want to admit it now, he seems to have faith in Thomas and knows that he can trust him. Thomas has always been there when Victor needed him even when Victor was not there for Thomas. The wasp’s nest incident is proof of the trust. Victor claiming that Thomas can fly is showing
that Victor has faith in him. Thomas had told Victor of his father leaving before anyone else knew. Also, at the end of the story when Victor gives Thomas some of his father’s ashes, Thomas already knows what he will do with them. Thomas obviously had a hard life and has had to deal with a lot of mockery because of his special gifts. These gifts are part of what brings their friendship back together, if only for a short time, to fulfill the promise Thomas made to Victor’s father. Question #5 I finished Kindred very quickly. I was intrigued by the opening paragraph; I could not put it down! Dana was a very interesting character that you obviously get to know the most but it was Alice who was the most interesting character to me. The fear and emotions that she had to endure starting at such a young age was heart-breaking. We all realize that slavery was a very real and ugly part of America’s history but this really opened my eyes to what people had to endure. Alice, born free, was under the false hope that she would not be owned by anyone. When she is captured with her husband, she is suddenly owned by a person who was to her; a childhood friend, would be rapist, eventually the father of her children and her untimely demise. Why would Rufus pretend to sell their children? Punishment? Really? That seems unreasonably cruel, even for him. All in all, I really enjoyed the book and have probably talked my husband’s ear off about it. I will probably read it again within the next week to see if I missed anything! Question #6 After watching the videos, I realized that poetry can be so very moving, as it should be, but I never imagined the feelings it would stir. Some of them made me feel angry and disturbed. Since I don’t like to feel that way, I video I enjoyed the most was “Thinking about You”. It made me think about my husband and the way I felt when we first were dating and even now! Although I wasn’t in school at the time, I would think about him at work or when I was traveling. This video made me laugh out loud and giggle at his play on words. The way that he moved and spoke was very fun and playful as well. Although that was my favorite, I have to say that “Hands” was my second favorite. When she started, I thought that she was making fun of the size of her hands, they seemed really big, but then it took a turn. Why I think I liked it as well was that it made me think of my dad and I miss him.
