Devanté J Hamilton I devante.hamilton@pcc.edu October 28, y Professor Woodbury rachelle.woodbury@pcc.edu Writing Assignment Week 4 In spring of 2007, following my eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., I flew to New York City, the the cultural capital of the Western Hemisphere. I met my mother and godmother who were already in New York City. My mother is a former Nike executive and was in town on business; while my godmother was in town fundraising for her foundation Special Moments. We visited the Theater District of New York City better known as Broadway—home of highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. My godmother purchase tickets to see mu - sical Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre on 51th Street, Manhattan. Gershwin Theatre has the largest seating capacity of any Broadway theatre, which is necessary for such a large musical production. The theatre has been home to Wicked since 2003. Gershwin Theatre was a magical place and is home to the American Theater Hall of Fame. The stage was quite large and the audi - torium was very expansive with orchestra and mezzanine seating. The atmosphere begins very dark and spooky like a Halloween set. The production was highly professional with a modern English dialog. I did think that actors were quite melodramatic but that is Broadway for you. Wicked is music and dramatic adaptation of the based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. Gregory Maguire’s novel itself is retelling of the L. Frank Baum ’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the film The Wizard of Oz (1939). American c omposer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz created the music and the libretto was written by screenwriter and dramatist Winnie Holzman . Wicked is written in the perspective
of the two witches of the Land of Oz—untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, and the Good Witch, Glinda. The plot commences prior to Dorothy Gale arrival in Oz and con - tinues after her arrival. In Act I, emerald-green skinned Elphaba portrayed as smart, determined, and talented witch, who is oft misunderstood, while her counterpart Galinda is the popular bub - bly blonde. The two witches become the unlikeliest of friends after a brief rivalry over the same love-interest— the Winkie Prince Fiyero Tigelaa r—and struggle with their opposing viewpoints and personalities. However, the revelation that the Wonderful Wizard of Oz was merely a fraud with no magical powers and his government was corrupt brought an end to their friendship. To suppress the truth, falsehoods are spread that Elphaba is a “wicked witch,” which leads to her public fall from grace. I will leave the synopsis there, in case you have not seen the play. Wicked addresses the theme of good versus evil with a twist. Instead of good versus evil in the traditional sense as a conflict between opposing parties, Wicked portrays the theme as an internal conflict within each character. No one is simply good or evil. In addition, the musical addresses the con - cept of perspective: there are always two or more sides to a story, which is what resonated with me. Perspective is important in order to achieve objectivity of one’s self and the surrounding world; without perspective human experience and reality is subjective and only one-sided.
