Number the Stars and The Diary of Anne Frank Compare and Contrast Essay After reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry and The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, I noticed that both books were not only were they based on the time of the Holocaust, but between both books’ setting, conflict and themes, there are a few similarities and differences. A similarity between the setting in both Number the Stars and The Diary of Anne Frank , is that both take place in Germany during the the Nazi invasion, World War II . The settings may both take place in Germany but in different parts. On page 449 it shows us that the setting of The Diary of Anne Frank takes place in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Even though the setting of The Diary of Anne Frank is Amsterdam, the scenes are from inside of the Secret Annex, “Never...It isn’t safe. No, you must never go beyond that door.” (459). While on page 2 in Number the Stars it states in the text, “...past the small shops and cafes of her neighborhood here here in northeast Copenhagen,” and, “ ‘We are such a tiny country,’ … ‘He knew how few soldiers Denmark had.’” (15) that the book’s setting takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark. The setting also takes place in Gilleleje, Denmark, “ ‘Where are you going?’ he asked. ‘Gilleleje,’... ‘My brother lives there. We are going to visit him.” (55) A similarity between the conflict in Number the Stars and The Diary of Anne Frank is that they both have characters living in hiding to escape Nazi persecution of Jewish people. In Number the Stars the main conflict is when the Nazis are first given Hitler’s plan to round up all the Jews in Denmark and take them away and now the Rosens aren't safe in Denmark anymore. On page 36 it states in the text the major conflict, “ ‘They plan to arrest all the Danish Jews. They plan to take them away.’” In the text, “ ‘We couldn’t take all three of them… One person we can hide. Not three. So Peter has helped Ellen’s parents to go elsewhere. We don’t know where… But they
are safe.’” on page 36, it shows us that the Johansen’s took Ellen into hiding as if she was there own daughter, and Peter took Mr. and Mrs.Rosen into hiding from the Nazis. One of the conflicts in The Diary of Anne Frank is when Anne and her family go into hiding, “ ‘Yesterday Father told me we were going into hiding. Where, he wouldn’t say.’” (453). This news didn’t necessarily affect Anne until later on page 459, “ ( For the first time Anne realizes what ‘going into hiding’ means.) ”. This immediate struggle in Anne’s life occurs within the context of the sweeping conflict of World War II. A final similarity between both Number the Stars and The Diary of Anne Frank is that they both share the same theme. The theme they both share is identity. In Number the Stars Ellen’s symbol of her Jewish identity is the Star of David. But even when Annemarie has to rip the necklace right off her neck on page 45 , Ellen is still Jewish, “ ‘Hold still,’ Annemarie commanded. ‘This will hurt.’ She grabbed the little gold chain, yanked with all her strength, and broke it.” In The Diary of Anne Frank while hiding in the Secret Annex, Anne explores her identity as daughter, lover, sister, friend, war reporter, philosopher, and writer, just to name a few aspects. Anne identifies herself as Jewish, in terms of her cultural heritage, and, to some degree, her religion. “Writer” is the strongest aspect of Anne’s identity, “ ‘But always remember this, Anneke. There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind.” (459) Also on page 507 in an excerpt from Anne’s diary it states how she even wanted to become a writer, “ ‘I have often been downcast myself...but never in despair. I can shake off everything if I write. But … and that is the great question… will I ever be able to write well? I want so much. I want to go living even after my death… Already I know what I want. I have a goal, an opinion.’” Overall there were a many similarities and differences between Number the Stars and The Diary of Anne Frank. But between their setting, conflict and theme, there were only a few similarities and differences.
