Comparative Art Essay Climate Change
The two paintings by Zaria Forman and the Indian duo Thukral and Tagra have represented the social commentary issues of climate change. Artist: Zaria Forman Artists: Indian duo Thukral and Tagra
Social commentary in art has many purposes that can expose social issues to our world such as ethics, discriminatory events, war and defenceless children as well as climate change. These two artworks that I have presented represent the issues related to climate change and its impacts. Climate change is an ongoing issue that has been here for centuries. There are many artists that show their views on climate changes through their art to show their intended and perspective including opinions towards climate change. As the impacts of climate change become more prominent, these artists used different passageways to define the issue throughout their art. Having very impactful social commentary issues like climate change through art also can accommodate people with visualizations of the problem and give them a personal experience with the subject matter. This is really important to have regarding climate change because in today's time many people see it as an abstract issue that poses no direct views. In a positive way, it can give people a sense of being supported in their efforts to help combat climate change. The effects of climate changes and impacts that are being resisted by an artist’s point of view through visuality will be examined throughout Zaria Forman and Thukral and Tagra’s artworks with implementing and promoting change. Both of these artists have used many artist approaches toward the artworks to bring the climate change issue to the world. The first art piece by Zaria Forman, a beautiful Iceberg in Antarctica piece, was beautifully shown with simplicity the impacts of what is happening to the icebergs as the years pass by. Zaria Forman used varieties of cool tones of blues and greys and whites which completely catches the issue that has been shown through her painting that pleasantly can tell how long a glacier was before it started warming up the planet as her colour of contrast gets higher from the cool to dark tones. Although she shows the issues of the environment, she tries to focus and provide positive empowerment throughout her paint on climate change. As you look closer and see the finely painted, the glacier cracking, crumbling, and melting. As she represents the issue, at the same time her message always leans toward hope and action. “I try to celebrate what is still here; to give viewers the sense that it is still

possible to do something to protect this Earth that sustains us’’ (Zaria Forman). Zaria Forman took various steps to illustrate the element of designs as well as principles of designs throughout her painting. One of her most used elements of designs that actually made a defence in her painting that equally helped to peak out issues is the use of texture. The usages of the textures created a realistic approach to her painting which really help to bring up the topic towards the viewer’s point of view. This art also used contrast to value her opinions and creations about climate change. Having contrast is highly valued in this piece of painting because it represents the issue of climate change by using the sad colour instead of bright colour, which combats the sadness of the issue that humans might get in the future. Thukral and Tagra dua are also great artists who have been producing climate change work for the past six years effortlessly. These artists incorporated all the climate changes related issues throughout their abstracted style painted piece. It illustrates the environmental challenges and the anxieties around waste management, nuclear energy and air, water and chemical pollution that have increased, that the boundary between nature and culture has blurred. Thukral and Tagra have used varieties of vibrant colours to show their point of view, the impact that they have and their country is facing. They accumulated all the issues together very attractively in a pleasant way that catches the viewer’s eyes in an informative manner. Thukral and Tagra used many elements and principles of designs to showcase their piece in a very efficient way. They’ve used colours, contrast, shapes, lines, space, etc. Although this art piece is not so 3rd or realistic, the issues were represented really well, especially the illustrations of different impacts all in one piece. They have really expressed their validity towards the earth of 2-dimensional objects/ things as well as human activities which are deeply impacting the glaciers as well global warming by the
effects of greenery by incorporating the soil, plants and nature in general over all the extra usages by humans that are really harmful to our earth with all the aspects of art. They have also shown the aggravated erosion, the decline in organic matter, salinization, soil biodiversity loss, landslides, desertification and flooding with the contrast of colours' lightness to the dark side of the impacts. Out of these two artwork, in my opinion, the Thukral and Tagra are way more effective in terms of indications of the issues related to climate change. These artists took many methods to validate the concerns and their opinions towards their view of these social commentary issues in the community. Through the visuality of this painting, it also encourages the viewers to take a moment and see what are the actual causes of climate change that is heavily impacting our world. On the other hand, the iceberg painting by Zaria Forman only focused on one impact regarding climate change and how it is affecting the ice shield, which is a highly valuable issue as well but it just talks about one aspect of it. It’s not an eye-opener for the viewers to be engaged in my opinion. In conclusion, climate change is a very essential matter that should be visible worldwide in artistic ways. This way the issues will get explored outwards to people in more concern. These artists were very precise with their work to spread out the effects of climate change through various elements and principles of art in a highly realistic way with full engagement of the issues that affect our earth heavily.
