UJMI – UJMI TASK 2: ANALYZING HUMANITIES DURING THE INFORMATION AGE Maya Angelou’s “Caged Bird” was written in the 1960’s when people of color fought for their freedom and civil rights (A.K.A: Civil Rights Movement) (Caged Bird Maya Angelou Analysis, 2022). The poem described opposite experiences lived by two birds – one bird can fly and live as it wishes while the other bird lives caged and longs to express itself as do the free birds it watches. Literature was used during the Civil Rights Movement to express and articulate the sentiments, opinions, and worries of everyone who had been impacted by slavery. Poetry in particular was a popular form of passive-aggressive communication that was used to engage and persuade members of the African American community (American Masters, 2020). The majority of the literature written and distributed at this time by people of color used this framework to generate a sense of common identity and the idea of power in numbers. Caged Bird represents African Americans in the post-Civil Rights time when black skin was still considered inferior to others despite the freedoms granted to colored people. The work challenged ideas about the culture represented, because its content sets inspiration for African American slaves to be equal to their “masters,” something that was mostly frowned upon by wealthy Anglo-American and French plantation owners. This work challenges the idea the idea of racial superiority – that some people are superior than others based on the color of their skin (Lit Charts, 2022). In addition, Angelou’s work gave the colored community a voice, something that was also very much a challenged idea of the time. American Masters. (2020, December 16).
