Helyer uses this comparison because both armies were fearless warriors, strong military, and proficient in the heart of warfare. The reason for the comparison is because in Greek individual combat two people fought to the death and that is exactly displayed the same way in David and Goliath’s combat. 2. In what 7 ways did the monarchy change Israelite society? Define briefly each change. Which of these changes introduced destructive tendencies? (pp. 189-199) Student Name: Trevan Powell Date: October 24, 2022
a. The first change was a dynastic succession which concerned the transfer of power in the government. The former charismatic succession differs from the new because the dynastic allows the king in power the ability to raise up his son to succeed him on the throne, while the charismatic believed in an indwelling of the Holy Spirit. b. The second change was centralization of power which means that the central system of power was abundantly large with people and the change brought the central system of power to city of Jerusalem with few selected districts. c. The third change is the institution of forced labor which made many Israelites and Canaanites work for little pay. The two divisions were slight between the superior Israelites who were drafted and the lesser Canaanites who were captives of Israel. d. The fourth change is in the new professional army. The former army was made up of solely voluntary citizens, but when David takes the throne he hires professional soldiers to fight but also train up young Israelites. e. The fifth change is found in the newly innovated international relations. Israel became a nation among nations so that included the need for diplomatic ambassadors who could perform their duties in international relations which neighboring states. f. The sixth change was the emergence of a middle class. The former manner of Israelite lives was to be a herdsman or farmer. The change brought middle class people acting in the role of businessmen, merchants, and landlords. This change brought destructive tendencies because many more people were now obtaining less and less money. g. The seventh change is Jerusalem as a political and religious center. When David took Jebus or Jerusalem, it was unowned and David turned it into a capital. This capital was a religious center because it held both the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle. 3. Provide 5 to 6 hard questions that are raised for our own national situation today by changes that took place in Israelite society with the monarchy. (pp. 206-208) - Can our government continue to spend more than it can take in? - Why is there such a disconnect between the necessary care for the poor compared to abundant support of the military? - Would it be more beneficial for the country if it was a theocracy? - Do we have a double standard when it comes to “white collar” crime? - What is the largest factor of difficulty when it comes to solving ongoing racism? 4. Can a Christian make that statement? - No because our ultimate citizenship isn’t of this world or nation. c. To what extent should a Christian practice patriotism? - Christians may practice patriotism to the extent of respect for what God has created and protected. The patriotism to a nation should be a reflection of our patriotism to God in Heaven. d. Is patriotism a Christian virtue? If so, how should it be expressed? - I do not believe it is because our ultimate citizenship isn’t of this world, but Heaven. This doesn’t mean that disrespect is allowed, but we shouldn’t abide by the laws of this world. The reason for that is because it can create a severe level of paganism.
