Grade Level: Kindergarten A. Visual Arts & Math Integrated Activity 1. Visual Art Standard- Creating VAK.CR.2: Create works of art based on selected themes. a. Create works of art emphasizing one or more elements of art and/or principles of design. 2. Math Standard MGSEK.G.1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. MGSEK.G.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. 3. A learning activity that integrates math and visual arts is drawing various shapes inside of a circle. The teacher will begin the lesson by talking about the different shapes around the classroom. She can ask what shapes they see. As the students are raising their hands and sharing, the teacher will ask the students what characteristics that shape has. The teacher will also write and draw all of these on the Smartboard. For example, the table is in the shape of a circle. A circle has no orders. The door is shaped like a rectangle. A rectangle has 4 corners and two sides that are longer than the other two sides. After the discussion, students will then be instructed different shapes on the piece of paper that was provided. The teacher will ask the students to draw and color different shapes all over the paper. The teacher will instruct that they need to use multiple shapes and a lot of colors. The students may also add designs to the shapes they draw instead of just coloring them in. The shapes can overlap other shapes, touch other shapes, whatever they feel like doing. Once all of the students have completed the assignment, the students can present their artwork in front of the class. The students will describe the colors they used and the shapes they used. After class, the teacher will hang all of the artwork on the wall in the hallway. This will make one big mural using the student’s artwork. a. As the students work on their assignment, they can reference the Box by Sarah Morris to gain some inspiration for their artwork.
b. The Box is appropriate for students to use as a reference for their artwork because it displays how to the artist used different shapes and colors to create the art piece. The artist used shapes inside of other shapes, different sizes of shapes, and multiple colors. This artwork is appropriate for kindergarten because it is easy to look at and identify the different shapes that were used. 4. The art activity of creating a shape mural aligns with the math standard of correctly naming shapes regardless of their orientation or size. By allowing the students to both find shapes in their classroom and then create those shapes, aligns with the standard of describing objects in their environment using names and characteristics of shapes. This activity also allows the students to be creative with the shapes. B. Theatre/Drama & ELA Integrated Activity 1. Theatre/Drama- Creating TAK.CR.1: Organize, design, and refine theatrical works. a. Use imagination to create, revise, and/or add to ideas. b. Demonstrate skills of the mind (imagination, focus, concentration) 2. ELA Standard ELAGSEKSL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and large groups. 3. For the ELA and theatre integrated lesson, students will be asked to work with their table group to come up with a short skit, 1-2 minutes, on how to be a kind friend. As a class, we will come up with the different ways they can show how to be a kind friend. For example, helping a friend who got hurt, sharing your crayons, etc... The teacher will also make sure all the students know what a skit is. The students will work with their table group, which is about three students. Each group will be given a scenario by the teacher. They then will work as a group to come up with a small skit that demonstrates how to be a kind friend in their assigned scenario. While the students are collaboratively working with their groups, the teacher is walking around asking each group about their skit and assisting students that may need some help. Once all of the groups are ready, each group will perform their skit in front of the class. The teacher will observe all the performances. a. The students will view Sesame Street: The Kindness Kid Street Story by Jimmy Greenfield. This video will provide them with some inspiration to complete their kindness skit. b. Sesame Street: The Kindness Kid Street Story (Greenfield, 2018) is appropriate for the students because in the video it shows them ways people can act out kindness. Also, Sesame Street may be a show that students in kindergarten are familiar with.
This video supports this activity because it introduces the students to different acts of kindness by singing. This video will be engaging for the students and will prepare them for the rest of the lesson. 4. The theatre and ELA integrated activity effectively integrates both of the subjects. This activity meets the ELA standard because it allows the students to participate in collaborative conversations with their classmates. When they are working in their groups, the students are meeting the theatre standard of using their imagination to create and demonstrate when coming up with a small skit. C. Dance & Social Studies Integrated Activity 1. Dance- Creating ESDK.CR.1: Demonstrate an understanding of the choreographic process. a. Explore working independently and collaboratively with others. b. Create and perform a dance sequence. c. Explore dance elements through structured improvisation and play. ESDK.CR.2: Demonstrate an understanding of dance as a form of communication. a. Express ideas and feelings through movement, gestures, and facial expression. b. Move expressively to music and/or other stimuli. Dance- Performing ESDK.PR.2: Understand and model dance etiquette as a classroom participant, performer, and observer. a. Demonstrate attentiveness, full participation, and awareness of others in the dance learning and performance environments. b. Understand and demonstrate appropriate behaviors as a dance performer, and as an audience member. 2. Social Studies SSKH1: Identify the national holiday and describe the people and/or events celebrated. c. Independence Day h. New Year’s Day j. Thanksgiving SSKH3: Correctly use words and phrases related to chronology and time. (This will be used in the discussion part of the lesson.) d. First, Last, Next 3. To begin the integrated lesson, the teacher will show the “What are the National Holidays?” video on YouTube. Once the video is over, the teacher and student will

discuss the reason that holiday is celebrated and some adjectives that describe the holiday. Example adjectives: Independence Day: Free & Bold New Year’s Day: Renewed & Hopeful Thanksgiving: Thankful & Blessed The teacher can brainstorm with the class about different movements that can be used for each holiday and why that movements represents that holiday. The chronological order of the specific holidays for the yearly calendar needs to be reviewed with the students too. The teacher can review with the students that New Year’s Day comes first, then Independence Day, and Thanksgiving is last. After the discussion, students will then be put in groups of three. Students will work together to choregraph movements that demonstrate the holidays. Students will be instructed to sequences the movements in the same order that the holiday occurs during the year. Once each group has had the chance to choreograph the dance movements, they will present it to their class. The teacher needs to remind the students that they need to use the words first, next, and last to describe the order of the holidays and sequence of their movements in their routine. When a group of students are presenting, the “audience” will be attentive and supportive to their classmates. They will wait until the end of the performance to snap or clap for the group. 3a. Students will view the What are the National Holidays video to review the national holidays and why they are celebrated (Lesson Joy, 2019). 3b. The What are the National Holidays infuses social studies with art in a simple way. It allows the students to learn why and when each holiday is celebrated. This will give the students the knowledge they need to create their own dance moves needed for the activity. 4. The social studies and dance integrated activity effectively integrates both of the subjects. This activity meets the social studies standards because it has the students identify and describe through dance movements a few national holidays. This activity also meets the dance standards by allowing the students to express their ideas through movement, working collaboratively with others, and create and perform a dance sequence. D. Music and Science Integrated Activity 1. Music- Creating ESGMK.CR.1: Improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments. a. Improvise simple body percussion patterns. ESGMK.CR.2: Compose and arrange music within specified guidelines. a. Create sound effects to accompany songs, poems, and stories.
2. Earth Science SKE1: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs of plants and animals. a. Develop models to identify the parts of a plant- root, stem, leaf, and flower. 3. For the science and music integrated lesson, students will be asked to come up with a song about the parts of a plant and one fact about that part. They will also be asked to use their hands, feet, etc.… to make a beat for their song. As a class, we will review the parts of plants and their function. The students will work with their table group to complete this activity. As the students are working together, the teacher is walking around observing each group and the progress. Once all of the groups, each group will perform their song with the beat to the class. The teacher will remind the students that they need to be respectful as the other groups are performing. a. The students will view Plant Parts and Functions for Kids by Homeschool Pop on YouTube. b. The Plant Parts and Functions for Kids is appropriate for the students because it goes over the parts of plants and their functions (Homeschool Pop). This will engage the students while they are reviewing the plant parts and their function. 4. The science and music integrated activity effectively integrates both of the subjects. The activity meets the science standard because it has the students identify the parts of a plant and their function. The students then work with their table group to come up with a song and a beat to the song that identifies parts of a plant and their function. This activity meets the music standard by creating beats with their body parts to accompany the song they create. E. References Jimmy Greenfield. (2018, November 30).
