2) Why was Soul music and the associated artists important to the Civil Rights
movement of the 1960s, and how were these artists different than previous Black
artists?
They were different from some earlier black musicians because they sang about the
struggles and hopes of African Americans in a way that really touched people's hearts.
Their music reached a lot of different kinds of people, not just Black folks, and this
helped spread the message of civil rights
3) In your own words, describe the Counter Culture movement as it was described in
the text at the end of chapter 5, and what some of the primary elements of the
movement were?
The counterculture movement was characterized by people that supported civil war and
opposed the Vietnam War. The members of this movement were white Americans,
financially solvent and either Christian or Jewish. The ideology was often related with
anarchist and libertarian philosophies.
