Spiritual Determinants of Health
Mental health affects a million people around the world and it continues to grow within our society. Individuals may suffer in silence and some may find other ways to cope with everything that is going on. An individual's mental health is important as it will help them manage and cope with stress, help them realize their abilities, and contribute to their communities. Being healthy mentally allows an individual to build relationships, have the ability to make collective decisions and help change the entire world (World Health Organization, 2022). There are many factors that go into play when one's mental health is shifted which is based on their emotions, substance use, and trauma. Genetics also plays a part in an individuals mental health as some are more susceptible for developing mental health disorders. This paper will discuss the connection between mental health and spiritual determinants, how relationships shape an individual's mental health and how the involvement of the community/churches is important. Connections As we look at the connection between mental health and spiritual determinants we can say that the connection is there; it just has many moving parts. According to Bozek et al (2020) the determinants that were prioritized were cognitive/motivation determinants, personality determinants and demographic determinants, and personality determinants were identified. As they conducted research they were able to identify that religion and spirituality had some implication. It showed that there was some relationship with others, a spiritual dimension of well
being. It made an individual feel a connection with others, have a sense for life, and wanting relationships with a supranormal force. Spirituality is the way in which an individual seeks truth

from the universe that enables individuals to search for significance and meaning in the world. Someone may also look at spirituality as the dynamic reality, constantly exploring new adventures and the ability to learn what boundaries are. As individuals learn about spirituality and how it can impact their mental health they may choose to do prayer, meditation, and support groups to help them cope with depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety are two mental health issues that have increased since the pandemic. Being able to stay in the spiritual mindset can help one develop positive coping strategies to help with their mental health. An example of how mental health and spiritual determinants are connected is being able to understand
what and who you need when you start to feel like you are slipping away. Individuals who seek prayer, practice meditation and attend support groups
may feel a sense of peace, find why they are important to the world and their self esteem may increase over time. Relationships Having quality healthy relationships keeps an individual's soul and mind at ease. According to Do Social Ties Affect Our Health (2017) relationships do have a powerful effect on
our health, social connection influences an individuals well being and biology. Positive relationships with family, friends and the community can help one's mental health. Having negative relationships start to deteriorate one’s mental health causing depression, anxiety and an increase in substance use. Having faith based options throughout the community gives the individuals in the community a chance to connect with others, attend social groups, and find

individuals that share similarities. These options can help individuals open up to someone rather than keeping everything in. Low and middle income countries have more trained health professionals to help with individuals who are suffering from mental health disorders or who just
need someone on the professional end to talk or listen to them. Psychologists and Psychiatrists may not have the ability to reach everyone so having more healthcare individuals will be beneficial. Churches and Communities Individuals who are suffering from mental health issues may reach out to organizations or
individuals within the community such as churches, and places in the community that provide free and non-judgemental resources. They open up to leadership and people that they have built trust with so that they can provide the services that they need. When churches and the community resources come together it can be a very beneficial and strong source for the individuals needing help. As the two come together, educating the community on the different types of mental health illnesses and what they look like (For Communities and Fatih Leader n.d.). To build trust they can open up their spaces for group sessions to be had and to let the individuals speak about what they are going through. They have the ability to reach out and get the individuals more involved and it will allow them to help and lean on each other in their time of need. Conclusion Mental health and spiritual determinants of health can impact so many lives. Mental health illnesses are not going away but having the opportunity to educate a community that looks up to its community and faith based leaders will help elevate some

of the problem. It will help individuals build positive and meaningful relationships, it will
show them what positive relationships are supposed to look like, and provide the community with the education they need to help each other.
