Title of Artifact:
SDAIE Lesson Analysis
Description of Artifact:
In this artifact, I examined a vignette titled “The Making of a
Scientist” and performed a critical analysis of all of the different SDAIE instructional
strategies used throughout the lesson, being sure to highlight the modifications used
and placing each strategy with the correct category of effective instruction.
How does the artifact demonstrate your understanding of the research-
based theories underlying various instructional program models methods
for English learners?
This artifact demonstrates my understanding of the research-based theories and
instructional program models for English Language Learners, as I highlight a specific
program model: Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (or SDAIE). This
program model relies on the foundation that effective instruction is characterized by
four important elements: content, connections, comprehensibility, and interaction. By
creating an artifact that lays out these four different categories of effective instruction
and by providing examples found in the text for each, I am able to show my depth of
understanding of these categories and my ability to identify these research-based
strategies when they are used within a classroom environment.

Title of Artifact:
EDUU 526 Week 1 Journal
Description of Artifact:
This artifact is a journal entry that I completed for EDUU 526:
Theories in Language Structure and Acquisition. In this journal entry, I was asked to
think about and reflect on the historical journey the US has embarked on in regards to
bilingual education. I was then asked to take the experiences I read about (for
formulating my journal response), and compare it to what I have seen first-hand
throughout my journey as an educator.
How does the artifact demonstrate your understanding of the historical,
legal, and legislative foundations of instructional programs for English
Learners?
This artifact demonstrates my understanding of the historical, legal and legislative
foundations of instructional programs for English Learners, as it required me to learn
about and reflect on the way bilingual education has transformed over the years here
in the US, highlighting the fact that within the last 50 years bilingual education has
evolved immensely. In this artifact, I detail the most monumental historical, legal, and
legislative triumphs from those last 50 years that have completely rewritten the way we
educate our bilingual students, including information on the Title VII of the ESEA, the
Bilingual Education Act, and the Lau v. Nichols judicial case. Not only do I detail the
importance of these landmark decisions, but I also discuss in detail the specific effects
that each of these decisions have had upon bilingual education.
