Two approaches to art instruction are the product approach and the process approach. Select the one you would prefer to use in your future classroom. Describe the approach, including an example of implementation. What are two benefits and two challenges with the approach you selected? How will you overcome the challenges?
The product and process approach to art instruction are both used in the classroom I work in. Some students feel more confident using the product approach. They need a visual model of what the art project will look like to help them get started or motivated. They do better following step by step instructions. On the other hand, some students may need the freedom to create and do their own thing. The process approach works better for them. They may feel stressed out having to create something they may feel is hard for them. Or they may find step by step instructions challenging when they want to create something else. In my future classroom I will lean more towards the processs approach but be flexible with the needs of the children.
The process approach to art instruction is child led and allows children to create art that is unique and original (Bongiorno, 2014). In the classroom I am in we do a lot of loose parts art projects. For example, we set up centers and provide students with different colored play dough, yarn, felt, beads, sticks, cardboard, and pipe cleaners. Children are free to create whatever they like with the materials provided. they use their imagination and create different art projects. One student created a rainbow using play dough, pipe clearsn and colorful beads. Another student created a car using cardboard, sticks and pipecleaners. One other student created an ocean scence using cardboard as sand and blue yarn as the water. They were proud of ther art and earger to talk about it and explain what they created.
The process approach has many benefits. One benefit is students using their fine motor and their social emotional skills as they express their feelings through art (Bongiorno, 2014). One challenge can be not having enough time for children to get creative and finish their art project.
The projects may take more than one day to complete and may interfere with a new lesson. Another challenge may be students who have a sensory issue with certain art materials. This can be challenging and they may not feel comfortable using the art materials provided for them. I will do my best to be accomodating for student's learning styles and needs. I will do my best to plan accordingly when art projects may take longer. I will let students know in advance that they are free to create something entirely up to them and remind them when the bell rings
they have a 5 minute warning and when the second bell rings, it will be time for the project to end. This will help when we are short on time but still want the students to be creative.
