I chose an article related to missions called Cultural Intelligence and Short-Term Missions: The Phenomenon of the Fifteen-Year-Old Missionary.
This article is about the” nature of the cross-cultural interactions that occurred between short-term missionaries and the locals.” Id. The study was between Americans and how their Cultural Intelligence helped and hindered their missionary goals and the interactions these missionaries had with the locals that they were there to help. The study found that ethnocentrism was abundant. These subjects also had bounded-set thinking which made ethnocentrism worse. The money aspect was also studied. The locals said that they did not think they were poor, until after the short-term missionaries made statements comparing the living situations encountered. Having motivational CQ would strengthen the ability to address economic issues related to the short-term mission's work. Behavioral CQ will help in displaying verbal and non-verbal communication, not only in the area of missions, but in all aspects of one's day to day lives. The Motivational CQ was lacking in the study subjects, they
were very eager to accomplish the tasks at hand such as teaching and building, but they did not see the need to learn about the cultural values of the locals because they would be going back home in two weeks.
After reading this article, I realized that when I was in my teens and had the opportunity to do
outreach work with my youth group, I was exactly how this study portrayed the short-term missionaries. I have learned from taking this course at Liberty University that having a high CQ and continuing to learn ways to develop my Cultural Intelligence is necessary today. I am pursuing my degree in Paralegal Studies and was not able to find an article that specifically covered my chosen career path, but the article I did read has opened my eyes quite a bit at the areas that I am lacking in, and it also highlighted some ways for me to improve my overall CQ. For example, I have a bounded-set way of thinking and I will need to not be so narrow minded if
I want to succeed in the area of law. My interactions with the public will lead me to conversations with people from diverse cultural values than I have, but that does not mean that my values are right and that their values are wrong. If I created a seminar to help other professionals in cultural intelligence, the width category would be taught. The ability to be more open minded and less of the either-or mindset would expand one's ability to help more individuals. References:
