1 Unit IV Assignment Waldorf University HUM 1020: Critical Thinking Dr. Ashley Blake 01/15/2024
2 Unit IV Assignment What is my concept of a soulmate? This is a question that I only gave a little thought to prior to reading the prompt for this assignment. As I began trying to grasp my concept of a soulmate, I thought about the assigned reading this week in which a concept was defined as "general ideas you use to organize your experience and, in so doing, bring order and intelligibility to your life" (Chaffee, 2018, p.304). After thinking about how our textbook defines a concept, I thought about my concept of a soulmate, and I kept thinking of my wife, Ashley, to whom I have been married for fifteen years. After really taking some time and using the "concept triangle" that we learned about this week (Chaffee, 2018, pp.306-308), I was able to define my concept of a soulmate as a wife, husband, or significant other with whom you share an unbreakable bond. A soulmate is someone you can trust with every fiber of your being and someone who will be alongside you, supporting you when life gets tough. For someone to be your soulmate, there has to be both a physical and emotional attraction, and they have a personality you are just drawn to. A soulmate should always love you for who you are and push you to become a better version of yourself. In this response, we were asked to compare our concept of a soulmate with that of Dr. Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) from the movie Good Will Hunting. In the film, Dr. Sean Maguire defines a soulmate as "somebody who challenges you, someone who opens up things for you, touches your soul" (Van Sant, 1997, 1:34:45). Upon comparing our concepts of a soulmate, I felt that they were similar. I would redefine my concept to include a soulmate as "someone who challenges you and opens things up for you" (Van Sant, 1997, 1:34:45). In closing, a soulmate is a very real thing, and although everyone's concept of what a soulmate is may differ, I personally believe they are all looking for the same result. That result
3 being that individual who you can always count on and trust and who will be your partner through this crazy journey called life. I was always told that you would know when you found your soulmate because they would not be somebody you could live with, but someone you could not live without.
