SNHU-100- PROJECT 2 QUESTION DEVELOPMENT WORKSHEET
1.
Why did you select your news story? What about the story makes it interesting to you both personally and scientifically?
Living in Washington we have seen the shift in climate and having the data derive from a Canadian research team assisted in my curiosity and I wanted to know more how will this affect Washington? Has it already affected the climate and is this the reason why California has been having so many wildfires and Washington has had several tornadoes and lighting strikes in the past year? What can we do as a society to help slow the Permafrost from melting how can we help lessen the gasses that are eroding out environment? Hopefully this article and the research will help move forward with a path that can assist in a climate change solution before it is too late. 2.
What did you already know about the topic before selecting the news story? What opinions or assumptions had you made about it?
The article published in Sciencedaily.com Abrupt shifts in Arctic climate projected likelihood of an abrupt increase in wildfires also noted brought great intrigue. In the news there are many stories of families being displaced because of wildfires and once those stories become a daily occurrence I started to wonder why? The knowledge that I had about natural science was basic but the impact that it has on the world and the increase in the climate I did understand and I do believe that there are many areas of the world that need to be researched and that as a society we need to start to think outside the box on how we can combated climate change

3.
Which concepts covered in the course relate to your news story? How?
Concepts from every learning module reviewed so far have related the news article Abrupt shifts in Arctic climate projected here are a few examples of how each module assisted in understanding the article chosen:
SHORT ANSWER 2-1-2: DESCRIBING EVIDENCE
: The evidence for this article was provided
by nature.com
who also provided the reporting summary
and supplementary information
which allows for a more in-depth look into what the author of the article researched and how the evidence was able to provide a basic understanding of what Permafrost is and how it’s affecting climate change.
DISCUSSION POST 1-5-1 ASKING SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS: T
his was an important starting
point to begin the research on permafrost. After reading the article chosen and delving into a more thought-provoking review of the article itself trying to figure out how to ask the scientific questions in a short and concise manner so that responses from the students were more diversified and helpful in the further research of the permafrost topic.
4-2 WHO TO BELIEVE?
Up to this point in the course we have been working to ensure that our sources and reviews of the article chosen have been sound. But in so many instances there is misinformation and climate change are a large one. So many large corporations have lobbied the government to suppress research in science regarding to climate change and the urgency of what is needed to protect our environment.

How reliable is that data and is the evidence that comes from the data provided by the supercomputer as sound as conducting a research exploration group to go and gather current data onsite?
5.
Why would this question be important to a natural scientist? In today’s society the reliance on computers to complete data related tasks such as analyzing multiple sources to generate trends overtime. The research team at McGill University used a supercomputer to review data without doing an onsite exploration. The research team used data from
various sources verses visually collecting the data and processing it in small batches. This is important to natural scientists because as society moves away from hands on exploration and uses more probes, drones and automated robots to explore not only permafrost in the arctic but also expanding that exploration into other planets the work that was done by a human is now completed by a robot which saves lives in the frozen tundra and money on expensive manned exploration but it takes away from parts of the joy in natural science observation, theory and asking the question why or how on the spot just by using a robot doesn’t take away from the importance of the human mind and the curiosity that has helped build our scientific community.
