Week 4 Assignment: Validate and Embrace Spiritual Perspectives Dylan Blodgett MFT-6103 v3: Cultural Diversity, Gender, and Family Development
Oxford Languages defines spirituality as “the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.” To many people, this is something that they consider to be of utmost importance in their lives and also something that helps guide their choices day to day. Through spirituality, people make their choices on how to live, what to prioritize, and sometimes even how to recover from events. Spirituality for many primarily acts as a guidebook on life and how they should be living. For me, spirituality has never been a large part of my life at any point. I did not grow up in a religious household of any kind. This has caused some problems within my adult life in my own relationships with those who may have a more spiritual background as opposed to myself. This is for sure also something that I can foresee becoming a potential issue for my future career in marriage and family counseling if I do not take the time and due respect to attempt to better understand those of various spiritual and religious backgrounds. While I may struggle with not being spiritual or religious myself, I do consider myself to have a decent understanding of various Christian denominations as that is the religion I have the most exposure to overall growing up in a traditional southern American household where even if my parents were not spiritual or religious overall many of those around us were very spiritual and religious. My primary hope is through this assignment and research that I can make sure I learn how to better understand various religious and spiritual backgrounds and also
learn valuable research skills to set myself up with skills for the future that I can use whenever I encounter a religious or spiritual background that I am not familiar with. Within this paper, I will primarily be looking into Mormonism. Mormonism is a denomination of Christianity that has always seemed to have a veil of mystery around it and many that I have spoken to, have painted Mormonism with a brush of shame or embarrassment leading to an interest in the overall workings of the religion. Mormonism is a church that is associated with the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints started by Joseph Smith in Western New York in the 1820s and 1830s. Within Mormonism, many do self-identify as Christians as they believe in the singular Christian God, and believe in the Bible being the overall word of God. However, in an interesting contrast to many other Christian religions, Mormonism believes the Christian bible to be incomplete. Many of the overall beliefs, regardless of the differing opinions regarding the bible, seem to be in line and or similar to other Christian denominations (catholicism, baptism, etc). With beliefs of baptism, repentance for the forgiveness of your sins, no premarital sex, belief in marriage, prohibiting homosexuality, etc. Change and healing within this religion are accomplished through healing rituals or patriarchal blessings that are usually designed to provide comfort and guidance to those in particular situations where they may be encountering a struggle such as personal problems or potential marriage and family problems. The Mormon faith places a high importance on physical health with its restriction on things such as soda, coffee, or tobacco, like many faiths the

mental health aspects are primarily handled through belief and faith with the support system usually consisting of other members of the church or the leadership of the church providing mental health support. While I believe that I would ensure that I create a healthy and open space for those involved and welcome in all kinds of faith, however, I do not see myself as someone who will be heavily integrating my own faith or spirituality into my own clinical work. This is primarily due to the fact that I do not have a spirituality or religion that primarily guides me in life. I do however understand that it may be important for some that assist them with their own spirituality in mind and to ensure that I am able to accomplish this for those with more spirituality than I. I will be sure during the initial sessions when just outlining the overall problems and getting background information of clients such as age, overall family structures, careers, etc. to also ensure I receive and understand what faith or spirituality they might ascribe to and from there depending on their answers asking them various questions regarding things such as “to what degree is your faith and spirituality an important aspect to consider in these sessions?”, “What kind of solutions do you see us reaching through these sessions that may fall in line with your faith and spirituality?” From there we can begin to discuss and collaborate to create a treatment plan that we believe may work best for all parties involved in order to create realistic and positive solutions while taking into consideration and respecting others' faith and spirituality.
