Purpose Plan Worksheet
Complete Parts 1, 2, and 3 of this worksheet by briefly answering the following questions.
Part 1: Academics
●
In which program of study are you enrolled
The program of study I am enrolled in is “Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities.” This program covers grades K-12. ●
Identify the required courses in your program.
The courses I am required to take for my program are Survey of Moderate to Severe Special Education, Moderate to Severe: Professional, Ethical, and Legal Practices, Assessment Eligibility in Moderate to Severe Special Education, U.S and Arizona Constitutions for Teacher Candidates, Moderate to Severe: Care, Collaboration, and Communication, Moderate to Severe: Instructional Planning, Strategies, and Assessment, Moderate to Severe: Classroom Management and Behavior Analysis, Postsecondary Transition Planning for Moderate to Severe Exceptionalities, Applying Phonics and the Science in Reading in Adaptive Communication, Methods of Structured English Immersion for K-12 Education, Moderate to Severe: Methods of Teaching: Functional Mathematics and Science, Research-Based Instruction, Remediation and Intervention in ELA.
●
Of the courses that you identified above, which ones require practicum/field experience hours?
The following classes require field experience hours: Methods of Structured English Immersion for K-12, Survey of Moderate
to Severe Special Education, Moderate to Severe: Professional, Ethical, and Legal Practices, Moderate to Severe: Care, Collaboration, and Communication, Moderate to Severe: Instructional Planning, Strategies, and Assessment, Moderate to Severe:
Classroom Management and Behavior Analysis, Postsecondary Transition Planning for Moderate to Severe Exceptionalities, Applying Phonics and the Science in Reading in Adaptive Communication, Moderate to Severe: Methods of Teaching, Research-Based Instruction, Remediation and Intervention in ELA.
●
Which courses do you anticipate being the most challenging? Why?
●
I anticipate Moderate to Severe: Methods of Teaching Functional Mathematics and Science, as well as Applying Phonics and the Science of Reading in Adaptive Communication to be the most difficult. I think the math and science course will be difficult because there are many manipulatives and methods for teaching math that need to be learned in order to have a full understanding of how to instruct math for grades K 12. The phonics class I anticipate to be difficult because letter pronunciation is very difficult to master.
●
What skills or resources will you need for this program of study and how will you acquire them?
I will need to use time management skills to balance work, class assignments, and completing practicum hours. I will develop this skill by creating a schedule early on in the course. I plan on using the message feature on Halo and during office hours to help me understand material I find difficult. Even though this is an online course I still plan on using professors as a resource for knowledge and clarification. I plan on using the Student Success Center for writing and math assistance when I am struggling with the technical aspects of an assignment. ●
After exploring the resources on the COE page within the Student Success Center, which resources will be the most helpful to you?
The COE section of the Student Success Center had many helpful resources. The curricular multimedia section is a resource I see
myself using. I am a visual and auditory learner, I think the videos will be helpful for educating me on concepts related to special education. The different forms available in this section are also something I know I will be using, these are the forms required for
observations and lesson planning. The skills development section for grammar and writing will definitely be helpful when I get to
the math class and the phonics class I mentioned previously. Part 2: Spirituality
●
How does President Brian Mueller talk about faith, learning, and work in the videos on One Foundation?
President Brian Mueller talks about integrating faith into education and classwork. At GCU faith is worked into the curriculum but all perspectives of faith are discussed and welcomed. Faith is used to create a positive environment at the school, although religion is about the school it is never forced on anyone. Prayer is used to help students and faculty and the principles of faith are the foundation of GCU’s values. ●
How do you plan to integrate your personal or spiritual growth into your academic journey?
My personal and spiritual growth goal is to become more certain of what I want out of life, as well as try and become a person who is confident in their skills. As a young person, I often feel like an imposter when I am teaching, it feels as though I do not deserve to be the teacher of the class. I also question if teaching is truly what I should be doing. I am hoping that throughout my academic and spiritual journey, I become more confident in my skills and gain experience in all areas of education. I believe that learning more about my field and seeing various grade levels will help me feel more qualified and ease my feelings of not deserving to be in charge. Part 3: Practicum/Field Experience
Complete the following items based on information regarding Practicum/Field Experience under “Program and Course Resources” on the College of Education page in the Student Success Center.
●
Click on the Explore More Videos category and locate the video, “Overview of Practicum Field Experience Requirements”, under the Practicum heading (you will need to log in to watch the video). After watching the video. Provide three examples of practicum/field experience requirements.
Three examples of practicum requirements are making sure you have fingerprint clearance, dressing professionally, and making sure you meet all additional requirements for the school you are attending such as COVID-19 Vaccines or TB tests.
●
Review the “Practicum/Field Experience Placement Guidelines” document with the Practicum/Field Experience section
of the Student Success Center. In STEP 3, access and review the Practicum/Field Experience Overview module. Describe how you will introduce yourself to the potential classroom teacher and what important information you will provide to them upfront?
I will introduce myself to my cooperating teacher as A Grand Canyon University graduate school student who is majoring in special education. I will explain my reasoning for selecting their school and thank them for taking the time to speak with me. I will then show them the list of requirements for this field assignment and ask if there would be any issue fulfilling these requirements in their classroom. ●
For one of the courses in your program listed in the “Practicum/Field Experience Fact Sheet,” provide details for a practicum/field experience that you find interesting and explain why.
A class that I think will be an interesting field experience is Research-Based Instruction, Remediation, and Intervention in ELA. I
think this field experience will be interesting because it is with students grades 9-12 and I have never worked with students at the grade level before. I think it will be very different from the 3-5-year-olds that I am used to working with, especially since this fieldwork is focused on a specific subject.
●
After learning about the Participant Roles in the “Clinical Field Experience Handbook - Initial Licensure Programs,” select two participants and describe how you might utilize each to successfully complete your practicum/field experience requirements.
The first participant that I believe will help me be successful in completing my practicum requirements is the mentor. The mentor is the teacher who will give me the ability to perform all the tasks required of me for that specific field experience. The GCU Faculty supervisor is the second individual who will help me complete my practicum requirements. When I am student teaching they will provide me insight on the things I did well and the things I need to improve upon which will help me improve as an educator. They will also be responsible for deciding if I pass or fail my student teaching.
