Importance of Early Childhood and Special Education Early Childhood and Special Education is critical in the educational field for children. They address the educational needs of children with developmental disabilities or delays. As an educator in the early childhood special education field, it is the responsibility of us and our colleagues to do our best to nurture the holistic development of children with exceptionalities and those without. This can be done by supplying educational experiences that are tailored to cater to their individual needs. These early years are fundamental for setting the course of these children’s lives, and effective interventions can drastically improve their outcomes in the long term. It is my belief that early intervention for these children is the key to the ability to maximize the potential of every child and that every child, regardless of ability, bears the right to an education that respects and fosters their individuality and independence. Early Learning and Development Theories and Philosophies There are several theories and philosophies that set up early learning and development. My own educational philosophy has been informed by a blending of different theories and philosophies that further emphasize the importance of developmentally appropriate practices in the educational field. Here are three of the theories and philosophies that contribute to my own. One philosophy is the Montessori Method. The Montessori Method is a philosophy that promotes child-led learning, independence, and respect for the natural psychological development of children, regardless of disabilities or delays. One of the theories is Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory. Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory emphasizes the importance of active learning and is supportive of the idea of children learning through play and exploration. Finally, there is Vygotsky’s Social Development Theory. The work of Vygotsky highlights the social context of learning as well as the role of language and interactions in
cognitive development. These theories and philosophies better inform my approach to the assessment, intervention, curriculum, and instruction by further emphasizing the necessity of developmentally proper practices that show respect for the unique learning pace and style of every child. The Creation of an Inclusive Learning Environment The creation of an inclusive learning environment is significant in my educational philosophy. An inclusive learning environment supports children learning regardless of abilities or backgrounds of the children. It is imperative to create a learning environment that is welcoming and respectful to the multitude of needs of each student and their family. This can involve adapting teaching methods and materials that can accommodate the different learning styles and abilities, the encouragement of positive peer interactions, and engaging with the families to better understand values and expectations. Professional Organizations and Ongoing Development It is important to join a professional organization for the continuation of learning and for professional growth. One organization would be the Council for Exceptional Children which supplies resources and advocacy for those in the early education and special education field. Membership of this organization or others like it could ensure access to current research, best practices, and collaboration opportunities with others in the field. Upholding Standards As an educator in early childhood and special education, it is my responsibility to stand by ethical and professional standards. This will include respecting the rights and dignity of the children and their families, keeping their confidentiality and privacy, staying informed of laws and policies, and engaging in reflective practices and continual self-improvement.

In conclusion, my philosophy of education in early childhood special education is firmly set up in the belief that all children deserve the opportunity to reach their potential to the fullest. By enveloping developmentally proper practices, creating inclusive learning environments, staying engaged in professional development, and standing by ethical standards, I am committed to making positive impacts on children with special needs. It is by integrating these principles and these resources in my own practices that I can contribute to Early Childhood Special Education with passion and dedication.
