4.1 Discussion: Biblical Perspectives on Important Ethical Issues: Oppression and
Poverty
As a social worker, how do you feel about the idea that freedom from internal
oppression and slavery to sin might be more important to God than making everything
fair now? Why might this be God’s priority?
I feel that God is more concerned with the freedom from internal oppression and
slavery to sin because sin is the origin of human suffering and pain in the garden of Eden.
Before the emergence of sin, everything was good and fair, and human was given dominion
over other creation; however, the emergence of sin is associated with the loss of freedom and
emergence of suffering. God’s primary focus is on freeing humans by creating a way of
salvation where Jesus (His Son) is the Saviour. Therefore, sin is the cause of oppression and
slavery among humans; hence, God prioritizes eliminating sin to free humans.
Identify and describe one key idea from the podcast that you think is an important
perspective on poverty and oppression. What assumptions do you tend to make about
poverty?
The key idea in the podcast that depicts an important perspective on poverty and
oppression is that how we treat the poor and the oppressed in society is our worship of God. I
learned from the podcast that God wants us to worship Him differently, including bringing
His people to him. The poor and the oppressed in society are God’s creations, and He wants
us to be responsible and take care of His people while introducing and teaching them to serve
Him
("gospel and poverty," n.d.). Therefore, the first assumption I make about poverty is that
providing for the poor and delivering the oppressed to God is our worship or service to Him.
Another assumption is that I should love and provide for those in poverty, allowing them to
serve God (
Lotter, 2015).

What role can your faith play in managing any tension within you as you advocate for
justice and improved conditions for marginalized or oppressed people while knowing
that progress may be slow or that full equality may never be reached?
Faith plays a crucial role in me by giving me hope in God; however, the situation is
hard to achieve the improved well-being of the people suffering from addiction; I trust in God
to accomplish the goals since He is the beginning and the end. And He will bring what He
started in me to completion.
What do you take away from this week’s passage and Jesus’ example of providing
practical help to some while calling people to a freedom greater than just their
circumstances? How can you apply this kind of approach and mixed model to your
work as a social worker?
I learned from Jesus’ example to help others out of their suffering, such as reaching
out to those held captive through their actions and informing them of God’s love and His plan
and way of salvation (
Wafawanaka, 2012). I work as a clinician helping clients in active
addiction; therefore, I will apply Jesus’ approach of calling people to freedom to transform
the lives of the clients and setting them free from any suffering associated with addiction to
good health.
