Daniel or Mark Essay
For this assignment, I was told to write about either the book of Daniel
or the book of Mark.
I have chosen to write about the book of Daniel.
In this
paper, you will learn about the authorship, the date, purpose, and different
themes that show up in the book.
First, I am going to talk about the authorship of the book of Daniel.
I
am currently doing a Bible course that focuses on the Old Testament books.
Ironically this week’s book was Daniel.
Daniel is the author of this book.
Next, I am going to talk about when the book of Daniel was written.
According to Arterbury, Bellinger, and Dodson, “most interpreters date the
book of Daniel in the second century BCE as a reflection of the oppressive
reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanes.”
I already knew this was written a long time
ago, but it is still interesting to see how something so old in such a different
world can be so relevant today.
For example, the story of Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abednego being thrown into a fiery furnace by the King.
It
was so hot that a man throwing the three in the furnace was killed.
However, Daniel 3:25 says, “...But I see four men unbound, walking in the
middle of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the fourth has the appearance
of a god.”
These men came out alive.
I’m sure you are familiar with the
popular song
Another in the Fire
, by Hillsong United that came out in 2022.
It was written from this exact story occurring so much earlier, but it is still so
powerful and so relevant.
The lyrics say “there is another in the fire standing
next to me,” I think that it is so cool you can turn a story into such a powerful
song.
The next thing that I will mention is the purpose of the book of Daniel.
According to the Bible class that I am taking, the purpose is, “An account of
Daniel’s life in exile and the revelation from God about his domination of the
kingdoms of the world.”
An example that I thought of for this was when King
Nebuchadnezzar took Daniel from his home to come and work for him.
Nebuchadnezzar even changed Daniels name to Belteshazzar.
Through all of
this, Daniel was still strong in his Christian faith.
He never left God because
he was taken from his home, given a new name, and work for someone with
a different faith.
This story shows us how, no matter what, we should stay
strong to our faith no matter what we go through.
This is a very important
lesson that all of us need to keep in mind because God still loves even in
hard times.
God doesn’t leave like friends, or family members, he is with you
all of the time!
Lastly, I am going to talk about the theme of the book of Daniel.
In the
reading, we learned that the book of Daniel is apocalyptic literature and that
the apocalyptic message is that God is in control (Arterbury, Bellinger,
Dodson, 130).
In other words, “God is in control of the world—be
encouraged.”
