Chicano Quiz Week 3
1. What were the main differences in the views of the afterlife between the
pre Hispanic Nahuatl and the missionaries? How did they instill fear of Mictlan?
The main differences in the views of the afterlife between the pre Hispanic Nahuatl and the missionaries was they held different concepts or ideas about where someone goes once they pass away and how that is decided. The pre-Hispanic Nahuatl believed that how you died decided where you would go after death, not how you lived. They instill fear of Mictlan by telling them that once they die, they would be able to go through 9 levels and arrive in Mictlan, which was the realm of the fleshless and not the best place to be and is described as a dark and frightening place. 2. Who was Fray Pedro de Gante and how did he successfully indoctrinate the indigenous people.
Fray Pedro de Gante was a missionary and one of the things that he is known for is being the creator of the first school in Mexico. This helped indoctrinate the indigenous people by
providing them with the fundamentals of the indigenous culture in art and plays, which were played by the Nahuatl people. He had a vital role in the indigenous people's teachings by blending their traditions with Christian concepts to make them more credible to them.
3. Who was Malintzin
and why are there contradicting views on her role in the invasion of Mexico? What do you think?
Malintzin was a translator, speaking both Mayan and Nahuatl. She was also an advisor to Conquistador Hernan Cortez during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. She then became Hernan Cortez's mistress and the mother of his child. Because she assisted the Spanish conquistadors throughout the conquest, she was known to some as a hero. But others had different views of her and this is because she was helping Cortez during the invasion, and some
viewed her as not a whole person and not a devoted woman. In my opinion, I believe that although it may have appeared that she betrayed her fellow citizens,I think that in order to provide a decent life for both herself and her family, she had to act in the best interests of her partner and herself at the time. She managed to survive and gave as much assistance as she could, and I believe what she did was the right thing to do and that it was in her best interest.
4. Whowas Antonio Valeriano, and what famous work did he write?
Antonio Valeriano was a Nahuatl scholar known for "The Nican Mopohua," which is a story about the Virgin Mary's arrival in Mexico that assisted in the preservation of Nahuatl
teachings. The Nahuatl civilization and Christianity are largely documented in the literature in terms of its culture. It is a significant work of literature since it preserved Nahuatl and provides the earliest narrative of the Virgin Mary's first appearance in the Americas.
