Tylor McDonell Case Study #5 Los Angeles Dodgers Summary: Two United Airlines flight attendants filed a lawsuit claiming that they were passed over for the assignment of working on charter flights for the Los Angeles Dodgers because the players on the team prefer a ‘certain look’ for flight attendants. The lawsuit goes on to read that the ‘certain look’ is defined as “white, young, thin women who are predominately blond and blue-eyed.” Dawn Todd, fifty years old and Black, and Darby Quezada, forty-four year old of Mexican, Black, and Jewish decent, alleged harassment/discrimination based on race, national origin, religion and age in regard to the staffing of United’s charter flights for the Dodgers and their treatment of coworkers on those flights. The Dodgers were not named as defendants in the lawsuit. Todd and Quezada have worked for United for more than fifteen years and have spent more than a decade to get a spot on the airline’s program that staffs the Dodger’ flights. With this spot, attendants are seen to receive three times the compensation of typical assignments, as well as many more perks. The plaintiffs had all the qualifications and experience but were never given consideration due to the fact that they weren’t white. A previous lawsuit in 2020 set the table for Todd and Quezada to become members of the Dodgers charter flight program after extensive interviews. Later in 2022, several white attendants were added to the ‘dedicated crew’ but did not have to go through any interviews for these coveted positions. Todd and Quezada were slowly losing assignments to Dodger
flights and ended up being demoted within the program leaving Quezada being removed without any justification. Are Any Moral Principles Violated? Justice: I believe justice has been violated because the two women, Dawn Todd and Darby Quezada have been mistreated due to the color of their skin and ethnic background. They are given a harder time when going through the “interview process” that was seemingly not there for women who fit the Dodger’s “criteria.” Todd and Quezada are most deserving of such a highly touted role due to their years of experience which seems not to matter in the case of this lawsuit. Respect: Respect is obviously being violated against Dawn Todd and Darby Quezada as their years of experience are being passed over due to not fitting the criteria the Dodgers were looking for. Beneficence: Similar to my reasoning for justice, I believe beneficence is being violated because Dawn Todd and Darby Quezada are being prevented the chance to work on the Dodger’s flight crew. They have worked years of their life and have been trying to get a chance to work for the crew in a position where they felt they earned. Are Any Moral Rules Violated? I feel that in the case of Dawn Todd and Darby Quezada, they are being discriminated against. The playing field of the flight attendants is not level as the Dodgers are seen to have certain appeal for their attendants. They are being singled out and punished for something they
have no control over. On the Dodger’s hand I believe they are violating honesty and integrity due to the fact that they had this sort of preference to begin with. Is This Case an Exception? This case study is not an exception. Are The Rules Justified? I’m not sure the rules are justified. Respect, beneficence, and justice are all violated. How Can The Rules Be Changed? The Dodger’s need to rethink their selection process of flight attendants. United Airlines also needs to ensure that all attendants are given fair and equal consideration for the this particular rule. They need to not show people that they do not have a chance solely on the fact on their ethnicity, religion, age and other factors. The preferences they need to have are that of experience and character through a regular and unbiased interview process.
