Double-Digit Addition The lesson title: Double Digit Addition Subject: Math Grade level: 2 nd or 3rd grade Concepts to be attained: Adding ten frames, using place values and New Group Above method. Concepts important to expansion: Students will be able to add multiple double digits numbers together. Learning objectives: Students can add two-digit numbers using an expanded form and a number line. Materials needed:  For explorations: Education videos sampling two-digit addition, manipulatives, ten frames, scrap paper, worksheets, pencil  For expansions: Number lines, ten frames, worksheets, pencils Lesson Phases Issues Activity Feedback Engagement Provide a focus for the lesson and probe the learner’s initial conceptions.  Define precise concepts students will explore.  Probe for what learners already know.  Inquire as to what they want to know.  Inquire as to what they will explore. -Get the attention of the students by using an attention signal. -Verbally talk through what is going to be taught in today's lesson -Review single-digit addition by using the ten frames -Review place values and the New Group Above method. -Review addition by 10s by writing on the board: 10+10=_____, 10+40=____ -Ask students if they know anything about double-digit addition. -Ask the students if they have any questions - Give a nod or quick comment if they answer correctly in examples Exploration Explore concepts without telling learners what the concept is.  Provide activities that allow learners to become familiar with the concept.  State observations and records learners should keep.  State the kinds of -Write on the board examples of double- digit addition problems: 10+12 -Show that 10+12 would look like using ten frames -Show what 10+12 would look like on a number line -Use a place value practice sheet to show what to do when you add 10+12 -Ask students if they have any questions about using this material to get the answer

Expansion Help the learners to expand and connect new and old content and skills and future content.  Connect with children's prior experiences.  Relate the concept to the program goals.  Ask questions to encourage discovery of the concept's importance.  Explore new experiences that will help to apply or expand concepts.  Relate to the following related concept.  Explore expected learning outcomes. -Connect this lesson to real-life experiences, like counting money. -Plan an activity where students must pay their “monthly bills” by adding up the bills they must pay this month. -Give students 3 to 4 multiple double-digit numbers to add up as their “bills” - Give out place value worksheets for students to write down the “monthly bills” they must pay each month. -Students should be able to learn how to add multiple double-digit numbers together -Once students complete their “monthly bills,” talk about what the next upcoming lesson will be, which will be subtracting multiple double-digit numbers. -Ask students if they know why they would add multiple double-digit numbers -Assist students who need help. - Give a nod or quick comment if they answer correctly in examples Evaluation Assess learning and help learners reflect on what has been learned.  Provide hands-on evaluation techniques children can do to demonstrate basic process skills.  Use techniques appropriate for learners to demonstrate integrated process skills.  Have learners use pictures to demonstrate how well they can solve problems.  Ask questions that help learners reflect on what they have discovered. -After the monthly bills worksheet, hand out a multiple double-digit worksheet to all the students to do as practice. -Allow students to work together and help guide each other in getting the correct answer. -Go around and see how each group is working together and how they are getting the answers. - Check answers as a whole class -Assign multiple double-digit addition worksheet for practice. - Go around to each student to see how they are completing the work for the “monthly bills” worksheet. -Ask the students what they learned throughout this lesson -Ask students what part of the lesson did they enjoy best. -Give a nod or quick comment about what they learned
