Sanchez-Galarza 1 Reading Guide 1. How does Belasco define Progress? Do you agree? Belasco defines Progress as more convenience and more meat for more people. I agree with the convenience and more people part, but I think having more sustainable options other than meat could be a better way to define progress. 2. Compare and contrast the optimistic and pessimistic views of food supply and population growth. What do you think? Optimists believe that population growth sparks innovation but pessimists only think about how the food supply will be impacted by population growth as there will be more mouths to feed. I think I would side with the optimists as yes more people means more people to feed but more innovative solutions would come out of it. 3. Explain how limited fossil fuels (especially oil) connect to the food supply. There’s around fifty gallons of oil used per acre of corn in the production. 4. Explain the connection between meat consumption and water consumption. Water is used in many aspects of meat production such as to clean the microbe rich disassembly line. Without water resources people might have to cut down on meat consumption. 5. Summarize the technological fix. Do you agree this is a viable scenario? Explain, citing facts from the text. The technological fix that Belasco describes includes coming up with new technology and tools to combat the problems that exist now such as climate change. One example that he uses is giving scientists the tools to design new plants that are more resistant to
Sanchez-Galarza 2 disease. Another situation that Belasco mentions is using biotechnology to develop plants that can grow in harsher conditions. By doing this there can also be new strains of existing plants that will grow well with the use of fewer pesticides. I think this is a viable solution because some of the components needed to make those tools and technology already exist but they can be developed more to complete the goals that Belasco talks about. 6. Summarize the anthropological fix. Do you agree this is a viable scenario? Explain, citing facts from the text. The anthropological fix is all about looking at how we feed ourselves in a more simple, natural way. Belasco explains that this fix will make the consumer want to eat lower down the food chain which means eating more vegetables as sources of protein instead of meat. I think this one is also a viable scenario which might be even more realistic than the technological fix since even now, consumers are aiming to be more sustainable or eco-friendly with their meal choices. 7. What would it take to move mass cuisine to a more sustainable direction? The consumer would have to get used to the idea of not perfect produce, tougher meat, and fewer options in the grocery store. 8. What is globalization as it relates to food? What are some advantages and disadvantages of a global food system? Food globalization is an exchange of different cuisines over the world. The advantages are that food can be shared over long distances but a disadvantage is that it could be a waste of labor and resources to transport everything.
Sanchez-Galarza 3 9. Give an example of homogenization in the global food system. In what ways can this be a good or bad thing? Five Guys is starting to become a homogenization in the global food system. This chain is all about Western fast food which I think is a bad thing because it reinforces the idea of unhealthy American diets in other countries. 10. Describe some impacts of climate change on our global food supply. Given what you've read in both Belasco and Zhen, where do you think we'll find the best solutions? Climate change will reduce the amount of land available which will impact how much food can be grown. Water resources may also become scarce due to climate change. By lessening our water and meat consumption, we may be able to stop some of the damage from happening.
