My hypothesis is that if we examine, analyze and compare archaeological evidence of the usage of mathematics and numerical systems in ancient China, we can prove that they developed independently and played a significant role in the development of the ancient civilization. My research question is what conclusions can we draw regarding independent evolution mathematics and numbers when we look at their archaeological evidence? What can we learn from the data gathered from the artifacts when it comes to how math and numbers contributed to the cultural development of ancient China? I have decided to approach this question by breaking it down into several steps including: literature review, data collection, data analysis, comparative study, interpretation of results and finally, conclusion. Breakdown of Tasks: Task 1: Conduct an extensive review of existing literature on the development of mathematics and numerical systems in ancient China. This will provide a comprehensive understanding of the current knowledge, theories, and debates surrounding the topic. Task 2: Identify and collect relevant archaeological evidence related to the usage of mathematics and numerical systems in ancient China. This may include artifacts, inscriptions, manuscripts, and other primary sources. Task 3: Employ various analytical methods to examine and analyze the collected archaeological evidence. This may involve deciphering inscriptions, studying patterns and symbols, and assessing the mathematical principles and techniques employed.
Task 4: Compare the findings from the analysis of Chinese mathematical systems with known mathematical systems of other ancient civilizations. This will involve investigating mathematical systems from neighboring regions, such as Central Asia, India, and Mesopotamia, which may have had potential contact with ancient China. Identify similarities, differences, and potential instances of cross-cultural influence. Task 5: Interpret the results of the analysis and comparative study considering the research question and hypothesis. Consider alternative explanations and address any limitations or biases in the data and analysis. Draw conclusions based on the available evidence and propose avenues for further research.
