Title of journal article: External Cervical Resorption: A Retrospective Case-Control Study Introduction a) Using the guidelines discussed in class, explain how the review of the literature section of the article is: i. Relevant and Current - The literature review section of the article is relevant because it provides a thorough and current overview of previous research on external cervical resorption (ECR) and identifies gaps in the knowledge that this study aims to address. The authors critically evaluate and synthesize the existing literature, which supports the need for further investigation of the potential predisposing factors and risk factors for ECR. 22 out of 32 reference were published within 7 years of the research therefore making the research current. b) Locate the problem statement? The causes of external cervical resorption (ECR) are not well understood, and while previous studies have identified some factors that may contribute to ECR, there is a lack of case- control studies examining the potential local and systemic risk factors associated with ECR. c) Locate the information that identifies the purpose of the research and then write a Purpose Statement using the appropriate script presented in chapter 4 lecture. The purpose of this research is to use a case-control study design to identify potential local and systemic risk factors that may contribute to external cervical resorption (ECR), a condition in which there is a loss of dental hard tissue. The authors aim to determine whether both types of risk factors play a role in the development of ECR. 1 HAN 251-Revised 5/25/20
Template Form for Journal Article Analysis To examine potential local and systemic risk factors associated with external cervical resorption (ECR) using a case-control study design, and to determine whether both local and systemic risk factors are associated with higher rates of ECR. d) Locate the information that identifies the research question(s) and write a Research Question using the appropriate script presented in chapter 4 lecture. "What are the potential local and systemic risk factors associated with external cervical resorption (ECR), and are both types of risk factors associated with higher rates of ECR?" Which local and systemic risk factors are associated with external cervical resorption (ECR) among endodontic patients, and do these risk factors contribute to higher rates of ECR? Additionally, what is the prevalence of ECR, and which specific risk factors are associated with higher rates of ECR in different types of teeth and at different stages of progression? e) If appropriate to the research methodology, locate the hypothesis and indicate which format that hypothesis is written in. If there is no hypothesis, write one if appropriate. The hypothesis for this study is stated in the introduction section of the article. It is written in a simple format; The study hypothesis stating that both systemic and local risk factors were associated with higher ECR rates was partly confirmed, as one systemic (diabetes) and one local (trauma) risk factor were associated with higher ECR rates. 2. Methods/Methodology a) What Methodology was used in this study? Retrospective data analysis b) What Research Design was used in this study? retrospective case-control study c) State the Research Methods: i. Sampling method – non-probability purposive sampling ii. Data Collection method – Retrospective chart review iii. Data Analysis method – Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics 3. Results/Findings 2 HAN 251-Revised 5/25/20
Template Form for Journal Article Analysis a) Describe how the results of the data analysis was presented (i.e., tables, charts, graphs, descriptive paragraph, etc.)? The results of the data analysis in the article were presented primarily in tables, with some supplemental graphs and figures. 4. Conclusions/Discussion a) What was the author’s interpretation of the data in alignment with the question/hypothesis? The authors' interpretation of the data was that ECR is associated with trauma, bruxism, and a history of restorations, which are potential predisposing factors for the development of ECR. The study also found that ECR was more prevalent in mandibular anterior teeth and teeth with a history of endodontic treatment. Additionally, the study identified potential systemic factors associated with ECR, including osteoporosis, hypertension, and heart disease. b) What are the stated limitations of the study? The retrospective design of the study. The study is being conducted in a single center. The small sample size of the study. The potential for selection bias due to the sample being drawn from a pool of endodontic patients. The reliance on medical and dental histories for data collection, which may not always be complete or accurate. The potential for confounding variables is not accounted for in the analysis. c) What are the suggestions for further research? The molecular mechanisms involved in ECR development and progression. The effect of various risk factors on the development and progression of ECR. The evaluation of the long- 3 HAN 251-Revised 5/25/20
