ANTH 176 Intro Forensic Anthropology LAB VIII: Biological Profile LAB 8: Sex and Ancestry Estimation, Case Report Instructions: Read instructions carefully, and refer to the book chapters and lecture notes to complete the Lab. You are assuming the role of a Forensic Anthropologist. There were unidentified skeletal remains recovered from a location in Oregon, and you have been asked to assist in creating a biological profile by estimating ancestry on 1 skull, and sex on another skull and pelvis. You will be assigned two individuals; you will estimate biological sex on one, and ancestry on the other. Use the information from our Christensen book ( chapter 8 on sex and chapter 9 on ancestry) as well as the class lecture slides and additional material in this lab packet. Estimate ancestry by analyzing useful features from lecture and the lab material below (see Table 1). The more features you consider, the better. In the second station, examine the remains and make notes of skeletal features that aid in your sex estimation (readings and lecture material, as well as the charts below). The more features you consider (Table 2, Phenice Method and Skull traits on pgs 3 & 4), the better. After you have estimated the biological sex and ancestry of your individual, you will write a short report of 100 words or 1
ANTH 176 Intro Forensic Anthropology LAB VIII: Biological Profile less that provides your justification for sex estimation of the individual using the features discussed in lecture and in our textbook, and an additional 100 words or less that provides your justification of ancestry of the individual. The report is at the end of the lab packet. Table 1, Ancestry traits (from Byers 2004) Feature: European African Asian 2
