Raven DeJesus 3-1 Discussion: Politicized Research in Anthropology Hello Everyone Some ethical ramifications for the scientist would be the unreasonable harvesting of medicinal plants. Other ethical issues scientists would face is while they are gaining professional notoriety like getting promotions or financial gain like getting a raise, the indigenous people are getting nothing. Medicinal plants became unavailable to indigenous tribes who used them for centuries. The issue scientists would face is the moral issue of ownership. Scientists would believe they have a claim over medicinal plants. However, indigenous people might think that plants should be used by all like their ancestors have used for generations. Another ethical issue scientists may face is that indigenous tribes may feel like their Traditions are violated. The way that scientists should respond is by supporting indigenous knowledge. This is done by scientists collaborating with indigenous groups to enhance their knowledge and contribute to societal goals of equity and justice. Scientists can also help to respect and preserve indigenous cultural property and intellectual rights. Scientists should also collaborate with other indigenous researchers and communities. What scientists are obligated to do is to understand the rights of indigenous people. Indigenous people have inherent rights and jurisdiction over indigenous knowledge. Scientists must recognize the Indigenous people's control over research and information management processes that could impact
them. Scientists must also acknowledge indigenous people's rights to access their knowledge. Reference Research Guides: Indigenous Research Methodologies: Research Ethics .
